17 hmr zeroing problems

Recommended Posts

from my experiences some thing touching a floating barrel can change point of impact but it should make it go up and down as well not just left and right and the fact that it is only left and right would suggest if it is a touching problem means the touching thing is moving although i agree the barrel being lose on a grub screw would cause this I would look there if mod is ok.

You can still get a tight group in a different position providing you dont move your body (minus your trigger arm when reloading)

well ive got one and mines alright

well thanks for everyones help but it turned out to be the scope i tried zeroing it in on lowest mag and got it set then changed it to full 24x mag and the point of impact changed so i tried it the ot

Hi:

It's virtually certainly your Scope and or (as well as) the mounts.

Your rifle is OK, my friend has an identical one and it just fine, BUT he has a very 'fancy' scope on it, not saying yours is

not so, but from my experience that's the problem??

You can't say its almost certainly his scope and or mounts, just based on the fact that your mate has one with a fancy scope and his is alright!

Give the lad some help, and tell him why its almost certainly the scope.

When your putting the gun away in its case you say it's a tight fit are you letting the barrel cool completely cold sounds like the padding in the gun case could be holding the barrel left or right which then cools in this position common fault with free floating barrels and thick sponge cases

fair point never considered that. On a down not thought once the gun starts to warm up would it not start to change the impact point as it would have cooled under stress and once warm over a few shoots start easing back. The thing i find interesting is all theses faults it could be I hope we get to know the problem once found.

I have also recently bought CZ455 thumbhole varmint 16" zeroed great first time,no issued was vey impressed. Went out today and the groupings were all over the place, very frustrated. Got home and checked and tightened everything and gave the bore a good clean with rod (150 rounds from new) so will be out next week to check it. Did notice V Max Red Tip Hornady did give closer groups than V Max blue tips? Sight is Hawke Nighteye Digi 6 x 24 x 50

few things worth trying before anything else.

1 loosen all fixing screws holdng the action to the stock. then retighten to the correct torque with a good torque meter.

2 set the scope to the middle range and forget until later.

3 get 20 rounds all from the same box of ammo

4 fire 1 shot and wait 5 before fireing the next alow the barrel to cool fire all 20 like this after each shot stand up then take position again before each shot.

5 do not adjust the stock or remove anything from the stock take a £10 note and run it between the barrel and the stock it should go all the way to the action if it sticks your barrel is touching the stock therefore not free floating.

6 put the rifle in the bag then remove and shoot again then try a couple of days later.

one of the above steps should eliminate the rounds moving either way last time i had this was on a big game rifle that got warm after 2 shots then would move 6" at 100 yards a cold bore shot was allways on bull though this is what you are aiming for not a hot bore shot.

Cold bore/hot bore, depends on what you are shooting.

If you are going out knocking over rabbits and crows then a cold bore shot in theory is only good for the first one, then thereafter you will miss!

In my experience any decent modern rifle will not group in to dissimilar a spot, until the rifle gets v hot.

Some rifle barrels seem to be extremely thin, and it could be why this happens, but I doubt it in this case because the fella is still grouping ok, but just in different places.

I would still reckon it might be a chasing the error problem as a result of rezeroing to a positional error.

do you take the mod off at the end of each session if so I would check there as if your round is just touching a baffle on exiting this would cause this problem as the mod will not go back in the same place when it is put back of I had this problem with mine so I now leave it on take the mod apart and check for anything that is not quite right it could be a slither on the edge of one of the baffles. I also noticed you say you clean your barrel after each session or 50 rounds all I can say is dont leave it for a bit longer some barrels really dont like to be to clean. I have not cleaned my target rifle for nearly 500 rounds and still score around 98 99. I have not read all the posts so if you sorted the problem or this has been suggested then sorry

my target rifle hates being clean took me 50 rounds to get it grouping well again after i cleaned it with bore solvents so i just pull the snake through it after a match

well thanks for everyones help but it turned out to be the scope i tried zeroing it in on lowest mag and got it set then changed it to full 24x mag and the point of impact changed so i tried it the other way and set it up on full mag then zoomed out and again it changed. i then set it on on 12x mag and did nt change it, tried that for a few outings and it stayed perfect.

i have now bought a far better quality scope of a mate and set it up on the weekend at full 18x mag zoomed back out and it stayed on target at whatever magnification perfectly.

so the moral to the story is that you really do get what you pay for when it comes to scopes
