Pigeon shooting.

Recommended Posts

I've just got a new it of permission on a local farm at last! my closest before was about 10-15 miles away. I popped in to have a quick chat on the way to one of my permissions and asked about the possibility of a bit of shooting. He explained that due to an accident in the family the mother in law can't abide the sound of guns but I explained how quiet my air rifle was and that I won't be shooting near the house and he gave me the ok. First job he say's "is to clear them bloody pigeons off my beans!" quick walk around the fields and found a nice spot in the hedge under an oak. As I hadn't brought any decoys with me, the first pigeon took about half an hour to get, landing in the tree above me. I popped it out on the beans about 15 yds out as a decoy then sat back for the next couple of hours with single pigeons steadily coming in and all but one landed in the tree above me!!! it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Had a cracking few hours and Roo even started retreiving them properly (he hates pigeon feathers in his mouth!!!)

Farmer was really pleased as he saw me walking back to the car laden with pigeons! reakoned he'd been sat out listening for me shooting but hadn't heard a single shot!

One happy Farmer and one happy me! Pigeon pie for tea tomorrow!!

Sorry  I stopped at 15 in the end (3 pies worth)

I didn't take the camera with me so sorry no pics, will deffinatly take it next time.

I should be heading back their during the week so will take some then. I've just breasted them this time so can fit loads more in the freezer! not that I'm getting hopeful but they were still coming in when I left at 7.30pm and I had already missed the main feeding time getting their so late.

Thats what I'm hoping to do this weekend, make up some sarnies and just tuck myself under the tree and spend the day their. Hopefully I'll get some crows/ jackdaws etc as well for next doors falcon.

I'll go prepared this time with a few decoys, seatbox and nets etc. so I can let them land, then shoot them. I had to keep climbing out of the hedge to clean up the loose feathers from where they had fallen out of the tree. Piles of feathers everywhere doesn't make a confident pigeon!

Nice shooting. 15s a good bag and if you are expecting more next time that could make for a serious amout of pie. Keep you in food for a good few days anyway. Should put some of them in the sarnies. Then you can sit and be eating the pigeons as you shoot their mates. :whistling:

Good luck at the weekend.
