SportingShooter 0 Posted March 15, 2009 Report Share Posted March 15, 2009 Where humane despatch of an animal is the issue, all other laws that may contrive your actions are by-passed. Ending the animals suffering is the most important thing whichever way you do it. If you carry a pocket knife, grab hold of the main body between your legs, headlock it with one arm and insert the knife behind the jugular and push forward and out. The knife has to be sharp or you will cause more pain than it is already in. Done it with sheep a few times, but if all possible, I use the gun. As for shotguns, if it is for humane despatch to end suffering, they are a perfectly legal tool with whatever load If you have to use a shotgun on a large animal, then stand at 5 yards, and even with a light load of small shot, the shot will still be in one lump as it hits the beast and so having the effect of a Slug.
