223 or 22-250

Recommended Posts

Hi there gonna put in my variation very shortly i know this has already been asked a thousand times, but advice and comments on which rifle to get soley for a foxing round 223 or 22-50. The cash flow is not like i wish it could be unlike you dartmoorman so this is a factor unfortunatley.

any of the above will do more then nicely. ive seen loads shot with 223 and its more then you need. depending on your land and how open it is and how go a shot you are then it will depend on what range you shoot foxes at.

the 22/250 has more legs and is flatter shooting but the rounds cost abit more. but to be fair the top make factory 223 ammo is just as dear to buy. go see some different rifle in the shop and see which one you like the feel of.

if you want a cheaper rifle look at the howa package of rifles. most rifles have same accuracy in factory form. the best bet is a good scope to go on top thats the difference in night shooting. that better scope can open up your range more to

Either works well. 22-250 if you're going to shoot much over 300 yards though, makes life that bit easier.

In 22-250 beware the glut of heavy-barrel rifles out there, unless your rifle never leaves the motor they're too heavy. Stick with light barrel unless you're:

Insane

Huge and very strong

Target shooting

I made that mistake and it meant I sold my Sako 75, which was a fabulous rifle and I still miss it...

iv owned both calibre's and i liked my 223 alot,i sort of grew out of it though really, i kept pushing the distance's further and further..if you want somthing that will knock fox's over at 200 yards 223 is good if you want to go past 300 yards get a 22-250....if you are reloading your own amo the differance in amo is next to nothing really..my 22-250 is bloody heavy but im a big lad so i dont mind lugging it about.i had a winchester youth ranger in 223 and it was lighter than my air rifle which meant i could carry my rimfire as well......if your new to centre fires get a 223 and use 40g bullets you wont go far wrong ;);)

The land which i shoot over i think a 223 would suit better, and me mate dartmoorman is getting a sako 22-250 so i think i will go with the 223, will also be able to blackmail him and get the 22-250 on my licence ( hope he don't read this thread)

i like heavy barrel mr l. less recoil :D

Recoil on a 22-250? You big girl :D

Although I will say one thing - it is nice seeing the bullet strike, especially at night.

you must be a big girl mate if you cant carry abit of extra weight   hard to see the strike of the 22/250 as it does lift abit

I got a .22-250 not long ago. Great calibre - Fast and flat, but to be honest, either calibres are going to do the business at "Normal" shooting distances. Anything over 200 yards at night and the margin for error increases mucho.

You may have a better selection of rifles and ammo in .223 though.

Surely if it is a safe shot for a .223, it would be a safe shot for a .22-250?

If you put a lot of rounds downrange, the .22-250 with hot loads can be a bit of a throat burner! Meaning a new barrel every 1000/1200 rounds if you want extreme range accuracy.

Nice article in March edition of sporting rifle magazine about the best foxing round, you might find it interesting.
