Mitch 0
Hey guys, Im am seeking some advice and help on my search. Im thinking about getting a dog to come ferreting with me, but i have hit a few bumps, Firstly there are not many running dog crosses like you guys have over their. I cant find any colliexgreyhounds or any breeds that i have read about on these forums. The dogs i have found are mainly whippets, and greyhounds. Im rather in experienced with dogs so you have to bear with me. Its a rather different climate over here, and rather different landscape so buy reading about good breeds that you guys use over there doesnt neccesarilly mean they will be ok here? does it? What im looking for in a dog is something that will mark holes, catch rabbits that slip nets, and hold the rabbits in the nets. I was thinking of getting a whippet, as thats what i can find over here and i can also find greyhounds. But they are mainly from breeders who dont use them as running dogs so im not sure what i should do. If any of you guys where looking for a dog and where in my situation what things would you look for in a dog say from a pet breeder. Thanks for all your help Quote Link to post

TOMO 29,025
WHAT YOU WANT IS A KELPIE CROSS BUT LIKE YOU SAY YOU MY FIND IT HARD TO FIND A BREEDER, I WOULD CHECK WITH THE FELLAS ON THE OZY BOAR HUNTING SITES THE MAY KNOW SOMEONE. YOU COULD BREED ONE YOURSELF BUT THATS A BIG STEP TO TAKE AS YOU HAVE LIMITED EXPERIANCE THERE WAS A PROFESSIONAL RABBIT CATCHER ON ONE OF THESE SITES IF I REMEMBER RIGHT HIS NAME WAS RABBIT CATCHER . HE WAS FROM N.Z HE USED A LOT OF DOGS WHIPPET CROSSES AND THE LIKE. HE MAY NO OF SOMEONE . BUT I DONT KNOW IF HES STILL ON YOU MAY HAVE TO GET A PEDDIGREE WHIPPET OR EX TRACK GREYHOUND . GOOD LUCK WHATEVER YOU DO TOMO Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
Heres a link for a breeder in OZ he might be able to set you up in NZ http://www.boardogs.com/ if you look scroll down to the pups for sale theres some bull greyhound types that should suit also check out the breeders. A few people have been on about stagx whippets for rabbits should imagine that would be a better way to go unless your gonna run anything else than rabbits Quote Link to post
skinnyrat 0
good luck in getting sorted bud Quote Link to post
Mitch 0
Im thinking about these Bully Greyhounds, They look awsome. I want something that will get me rabbits and will be a good ferreting dog. But i also want it to be bale to take foxes and hares. Will i be able to break a pup to chickens? and ferrets? Quote Link to post
Guest sushie
If you didnt want something for foxes hares i would of said use some type of smaller whippet cross for ferreting. Bullcrosses are usually very good fox killers! What about a whippet greyhound cross? Quote Link to post
Guest savageboy
hi matey , what i would do , first check the countrys hunting sites , type in lurcher on new zealand only , as i,m on yahoo and i can searce uk only. then see what yer can find , if no luck next step is breeding yer own , first find a bitch greyhoud ex track then find yer stud dog , colies are ace , you have kelpies over your way use one of them or a border colie , there must be enough farms over there to find yer working colie then get one lined up so when yer bitch breaks down you can take her , then there you are it,s not that hard the only thing is the time , but time comes any way , so by the end of this year you should have yerpup you have bred , hope you do well , BUT don,t just do nothing as i said time will come so it,s up to you , cheers savageboy Quote Link to post

nighttimenellie 4
To be honest Mitch, we over here are looking for such a beast as yourself, the search has been going on for centuries now lol, that is why there are so many crosses out there, if we had found the perfect one we would all have the same dog, im afraid what you are looking for sounds like the (some would say mythical)perfect all rounder, i wish you luck in your quest. dickyboy 1
what about a purebred working collie, acd or kelpie? don't know but kicking abour ideas Quote Link to post
DiStuRBeD 0
no those bullygreyhounds are no good for you mate, theyve been bred to have bulk, hence too slow(just look on the bdogs forum about the old style bully/greyhounds, they were more racy then todays ones) kelpie, no acd, no collie, no whippet, yes greyhound, yes staghound, yes, but u want to get a smaller type one, with not much wolfhound influence roodog, just a smoothcoated stag, probably better for hot climate, but might get ripped easier our stags over here are ok, but a lot of the rabbits hang close to cover when spotlighting, so get away, ferreting is a different matter, if ur near other warrens or bush then a whippet would be best bullcat, who may be on this site, has a stag with whippet in it, does really well, i'd ask him over there if he knows anyone. Also deeranbull kennels from boardogs, james knows quite a few guys with working dogs over that way, decent dogs there is another guy, who would be on AHN, named cooch, he has a working whippet, he can possibly put you onto working whippets. hope that helps ya mate, but be warned, watching the dogs run is addictive Quote Link to post
Mitch 0
Ok guys, thankyou for all your help. Im will get a whippet, when the time is right Quote Link to post
Paid 935
I would think your sort of hot dry terrain would suit a Saluki well. Quote Link to post
