You get a rather more co-operative attitude from the French, Germans etc if you at least attempt to talk to them in their own language in their own country. Where I come from in Germany ( north west coast ) we usually speak " Platt" Fresian that is close to Dutch as you can get. Oh yes and a bit of English as well.
