Guest hairypie
You never get this problem when you are a woman Socks....ill tell you my opinion why.I think some men get into working dogs because they are not man enough, by this i mean, they transfer their inadequencies down the lead to the dog and the dog has to be the biggest, hardest, nastiest, killing machine ever known. These will be the men who brag about the hours the dog spent underground, how it ripped the fox to shreds and came out with half its own face hanging off. Their big bull x lurcher (they would never dream of owning a little shivery grey x whippet!) has taken 6 fox in one night, and are probably the people who become the keyboard warriors we are unfortunately stuck with on various forums. But would never stand up to someone causing a problem in their own street! When your a woman your not supposed to be 'hard' so you get a slap on the back because you only take bunnies and rats in the hunting world. People outside the hunting world think women are hard and callous cos they kill things, and dare tell them you go lamping alone in the middle of the night then you are positively weird MOLL. thats the best post in this thred for sure even though ime a man i can see whare your coming from ...... Kane 2
I love it .All the rabbit hunters getting all superior complaining about not getting the recognition they deserve, the 1st thing they do is start slagging off game terriers and bullxs . I think alot of it comes down to the novelty aspect a lot of hunters have taken well over 100 rabbits in a week some even in a day.Where with foxes deer etc the numbers have to be a lot less to impress. Most hunters have as socks says started out hunting the humble rabbit and most of us will end with the rabbit they deserve respect.
Stabs 3
I've hunted in a fair few countries on some unusual-ish game and I've loved it, especially the pigs, but to me there's nothing better than a day out ferreting or raking about hedgerows. I'm really going to miss that when I get to Australia
macker 5
this is a good topic. i like to do a fair bit of digging my self. nearly all the decent chaps i have met through hunting are digging men. but i will always enjoy rabbits and ratting . it got me interested in hunting and i have never got bored of it. its funny a friend rang me on monday asking me what to do.he had a very tidy bull cross bitch in heat and asked me that he was looking for pups for allround work. i told him to breed it off a chaps deerhound cross i knew. i got a couple of calls saying i was mad for saying that off my digging mates saying what did i say that for. even though they knew that rabbits rarely got away from it and it also kiiled 52 hares on its last season. was not good enough. had taken the odd fox but was to valuable to the owner to be hunting fox more often. the lad took my advice thank god. hope the pups do alright for him

Simoman 110
Excelllent post Socks I started off ratting and rabbiting and had very limited experience with foxes etc. This was due to the fact that nobody in my family hunted and my mother was/is anti hunting . I got a terrier as a teenager and mainly ratted and rabbited although the dog did find its own foxes and bolted a few, I also converted the family collie into a makeshift lamping dog  I had been out of hunting for a few years and involved in competitive dog training but missed hunting too much and now get out as much as possible, either watching hounds, pigeon shooting, ratting and rabbiting with my old terrier and to be honest I love it i even converted my Shepherds from sport dogs into lamping/bushing dogs Maybe other people are in a similar position to me, i'd love to work my dog regularly to foxes but have always had trouble obtaining permission working my dogs, most areas around me are run by shooting syndicates and even ratting permission is very hard to obtain. I enjoy seeing any dog work rather than spend there life waddling around the local park with no stimulation One thing with hunting rats and rabbits is, that for some reason I can't explain when I am asked what my dogs regular quarry is I feel slightly embarassed to say rat/rabbit, my dog is eight years old but has only seen a very small number of foxes

Regards Rob Hi Rob, i've been thinking along similar lines. Over the winter myself and a couple of friends (who only use there terriers for rats) have been clearing cover strips and working around feeders to kill rats, however so far when I have mentioned using the terriers for foxes they have refused as they have people on the land at night with lamps and rifles To try and get some permission for next season I am making some cards offering free pest control that I can drop off with farmers, shoots etc cheers Simoman
