old dog 210
I love my Wednesdays, and today especially because we're hunting one of the best places i go to,good country viewing and usually plenty of furry friends, meeting the farmers on the yard in the morning for a chat confirmed it,the first piece of cover was an open woods which continued on to some gorse and fern banks,as soon as the hounds entered the wood they struck a line, down by the river which runs through the middle of the wood, all hounds speaking as they climbed the wood on the left hand side, what more could a huntsman ask for, they had gone off at a good pace and by now were over half way up the wood, two shots rang out but hounds were still going strong, then another two shots, hounds were still going but then i could hear them at they're quarry, one of the boy's on the CB saying that they had shot 2 the first one trying to sneak away ,while the other one was the hunted one.Hounds had crossed over now onto the other side, finding again and hunting out of the wood crossing a lane and entering a gorse bank, where all hell broke loose, hounds were in full cry screaming through the gorse,i knew our furry friend wasn't that far in front of them, one came flying out which was shot by a farmer, hounds were still going strong running to the top of the gorse crossing out over the fields and heading back down from where we had just came from, what a great bit of music the boy's on the opposite bank was viewing it all, they were saying on the CB that he was about 200 yards in front of them, they dropped bank in and were coming back up under us,then it went quiet "whats happening"hounds started calling again but this time they were marking to ground,a blast on the hunting horn and the terriers were on they're way,you could hear the terriers choking on they're leads trying to get there a field away, they know the crack, hounds put on the bank, terrier collar fitted stood back and waited for a bolt,in my mind i was thinking he not going to bolt after being pushed hard, and i was right the boy's had a mark at 1.4m on the b&f,time was getting on and i still had a lot of country to hunt, moving hounds back up to hunt the rest of the gorse they had nearly got to the end of it when they found again, two furry friends showed themselves and went back in,hounds got close to them again one making a run for freedom at the bottom of the gorse, which was accounted for by one of the farmers, while the other ran out the top and made for the hill,he had made up a bit of ground on the hounds but they were still with him,the chat on the CB was he is heading for the forestry, but he turned left handed and came back down into the fern, hounds had made up ground and were pushing him harder, our furry friend was panicking and every so often looked behind him as he left ed cover for cover,he should have keep looking forward as he ran straight into one of the guns, hounds had they're reward. We were having a good day hounds were in fine tune and the terrier-men had just confirmed they had dug that one,i moved up into the forestry block where hounds found straight away,to me i think this is the best hunt I've had this season, they worked hard on this one putting in a number of checks but keeping with him,he wasn't the only one in there the boy's seeing four different ones running around in there, they went around the forestry block four times,he then went out onto the hill for a short time before returning back to the forestry, going out the bottom back down the valley, one of the boy's having a shot but missing him, hounds were in tune and still travelling at a fast pace, crossing back up to the gorse straight through out to the fields, and going back into the wood, where we started this morning,up until then the scent was great ,they ran him to the river and lost the scent, they were trying hard to pick it up hunting both sides of the riverbank just couldn't take a line away from there, they had hunted him for 2 hours fair-play them and they're quarry had deserved supper tonight.
