Wooly coat in a terrier bitch

Recommended Posts

Ihave a nice looking working russell bitch. Her coat is quite dense but soft and wooly. I want a good rough coated stud dog for her when time comes but someone has told me that i should go for a tight smooth coat to improve the jacket of the pups. Can anyone advise me if this is right or wrong. I want good tight rough coats like a lot of Lakies have but don't want to go away from Russells.

I've not had a lot of experience when breeding terriers for coat (as long as its waterproof and tight I don't mind if they're rough or smooth) but I do know that in lurchers if you have one parent that is woolly coated and the other parent is smooth you often improve the woolly coat, getting a harsher yet still rough coat.

try a rough coated white lakie or even a red will throw whites ...offspring from say a smooth coated russell will carry smooth genes ..some offspring will still carry the soft coat but by being selective after a few generations you could have bred it out ..

Have you stripped the coat back? my bitch looked like a wooly gorilla until i stripped her, now she has a good rough coat...100 times better than it was before

i stripped her coat last year and it was very difficult to do as it wouldnt come away and was sore for her. i dont want to use a red dog as ive always bred russells and want to try and toughen her coat up.

sounds like you need to find a russell stud with a good tight lakie jacket then ;) let us know how you get on ..
