SportingShooter 0
Youll be scrounging for a while to find someone with a Hornet with ammo! Quote Link to post
reynardhunter 3
I've been lookin for an almost exclusive fox rifle (not at massive range sub 200 yrds) and although i think i'll be gettin a .223 down to the price and availability of ammo (not want to reload as of yet). i desperatly want to know what the 22 hornet is like. Any veiws?...on paper its a great calibre, but this is a real world unfortunatly. The hornet is ideal for foxes, i,ve had one for years and its accounted for several species the 223 is a fine gun but my phylosophy is, if it aint broke, dont fix it, the choice is yours Quote Link to post
victor 10
i know peopel who take pigs down with a 22 hornet. but if you did want a range gun but cheap ammo go for a 22-250. i recomend it to every one in the world Quote Link to post

Sterry 0
Would i be right in sayin that the 22-250 also sufferes barrel wear aswell. If i were to get more powerful rifle it would be a .270 so i could take deer and boar aswell as fox, but seing as one of the owners of my permission wants the job done but nothing to be hanging off the fox (they are bit squimish in that respect but fair doos) i must keep to (lack of a better word) lower end centre fires for fox ( i dont want/need to shoot deer and boar at the moment) so why use a sledge hammer to crack a nut. Proberly a very confusing post but im tired and its been a long day chicken run making Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
.270? Got as much grunt as a fiery Boar, about the same kick too Quote Link to post
Sterry 0
Most certainly but i really wouldnt one of thos boar to get up after i shot or i got one REALLY REALLY REALLY annoyed pig on my case. Quote Link to post

Sterry 0
Blast! i was so happy thinking i've made my mind up with gariels post. i think the best idea is speak to the local gun shop and see what he says bout him stocking the hornet ammo, but theres talk of him closing down in the new year sooo. (means a 30 miles round trip otherwise) on a tangent does anyone know if theres a different licence to sell rifle ammo than shotgun cartridges??? if not i can sweet talk the manager of the farm supplies shop to get me in some. There is different security required for them. The farm shop will need to either have an Ammunition safe of Ammunition store installed. And there is another condition to be added to his RFD I Believe. Quote Link to post
Sterry 0
I know hes got a massive safe where he keeps the shotguns cartridges and explosives and other dngerous what not. i'll ask him when i next down there. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
My local had plenty of .22 hornet ammo on the shelves today. That's because nobody round your way shoots Hornet. Get a Hornet, buy their stock and see if they buy any more! My local shops didn't Quote Link to post
Lewdan 17
Quite a few people on the site keep bringing up the cost of hornet rounds and the lack of availability This may have just cause for concern in many parts of the country but if the hornet is the best calibre for the intended use, then reloading is the answer! ( if poss ) May be a little expensive to start up ie press ect, but this will pay for itself in due course and can be used for all calibres in future years , as for the hornet / per round--- primers 3p, powder 6p heads ( 40gn v max ) 19p = total of 28p per round , if new brass is needed then remmington work out about £18 per hundred. i think hornet is possibly cheapest of all centre-fire to reload Hope this is of some help..
