If you have a FAC which lists deer it will tell you what sort you can shoot with a .223!! If you do not have deer conditioned on you FAC you can't shoot them. .223 is only legal for CWD and Muntac in England and Wales and when your FAC says you can shoot deer!! Quote Link to post
bobby b 0
Hi i dont know anything about howas but i have a t8 and love it they realy do make a big differance to both noise and recoil. You can not shoot deer in england with a rifle with a calibre less than .240 it must be that by law unless you shooting muntjac or cwd. speedystu 0
thanks for your input. back to the top is the howa 1500 varmit the 1 to go for? any bad experiences Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Speaking from experience, slow down a bit. Get out and have a look at some guns, make a slow careful decision. You won't go far wrong with a Howa, but do you want the heavy barrel? Are you shooting targets too? Are you shooting more than about 5 rounds quickly at any point with it? If you're saying No to them, then get the light barrel version of whatever you need. You will have a forend-heavy rifle with a moderator on the front (get a T8-AR or P8 Compact, not the full size versions, you get much better balance). And the heavy barrel is very heavy. I know, I had a Howa with laminate thumbhole stock. it went out in the field a few times and then I bought another rifle. The idea then was to have one rifle for targets and foxes. So I bought a Remington SPS Tactical, which is more accurate and more versatile than the Howa was. I like the Hogue stock, having had a bipod break the sling lug on two plastic-stocked rifles, I love the Hogue because it has a metal housing for the stud screw, and therefore won't suffer that. it is flimsy up front though, but this has never affected the rifle's POI or accuracy. But, I then got a good part-ex deal on my Howa, so I got a light-barrel, light-stock CZ527, and this has been out shooting pretty much constantly ever since. It's accurate, light and easy to carry. And before I chanced upon it, I never thought I would get one! So have a look on Guntrader, find stuff you like the look of, and go and have a look around. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
so i can shoot deer with a 223 yeh or nah If your FAC states as you have said you have no deer condition and cannot use it for this purpose. The deer conditions are very specific and even though I have an Open Ticket and I am a Deer Mentor my FAC lists little facts like I can use my .223 for ROE deer in Scotland whilst it is of course only legal for CWD and Muntjac in England and Wales! If you want deer then have a word with your firearms dept!! ATB Specific rifle choice is down to the individual, requirements, taste, budget, etc...the Howas seem to offer pretty good VFM but there are lots of others to look at..check out the Rem 700SPS DM, I recon these are pretty good even though I run Tikkas at the moment...I'm looking at a new .308 at the moment and the Rem is in the frame!! speedystu 0
again thanks for all your replies, i have shot a 308 howa 1500 with a t8 and yes i had arms like Garth after it was bloody heavy but never the less performed brill after 50 rounds, the shooting i mainly will be doing is foxing so the rapid round use is not that essential but will have a loo at the remi sps as i was my second choice.
