Hi lads just wondering if anyone has heard of Irish Wolfhound crosses being used in the field. I am just curious as I was walking the dogs on ballybunion beach yesterday and there was one galloping at serious speed. I started chatting to the owner about his horse of a dog and he was saying they are very inteligent dogs but dont live very long and are prone to health problems such as hip displacia. The man also had a great dane that was nowhere near as fast and Its head was only to the wolfhounds shoulder. The wolfhound was by far the largest dog ive ever seen yet very friendly and obedient. I know that these dogs are similar to deerhounds but are a much bigger stronger dog. I am just wondering is their any place for a wolfhound cross in the field???? I know a full wolfhound wouldnt be up to much as it would take it a week to turn.

I have a wolfhound bitch and won't ever waste my or her time trying to breed a lurcher out of her,to big and heavy.

Do you ever take her out hunting mate? Can she give a burst of speed, how does she run.

many of our stags have a large percentage of wolfhound in them and the can easyily be as small as 26 inches a friend of mine breeds them and although they are large they are smart have good eyes and nose and have the right build. they make a good cross

The Wolfhound that you read about in myth and legend is in fact extinct. The Wolfhound of today was recreated by crossing Scottish Deerhounds and ( I think ) some of the larger breeds. So to think that the Wolfhound was ever a worker is to fool yourself.

Wasn't there a Wolfhound coursing club started a few years back ????

It was remarked that when the Wolfhound did manage to reach it's hare that it then had no desire to kill it.

Hardly the killer of wolves.

Mind you, I'd imagine a 1/4 Wolfhound 3/4 Greyhound would do well in a show, if that was your thing.
