richie 1 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Share Posted October 18, 2008 im after a digital camera to replace my existing sony dsc T70 compact.. this camera is ideal for the trophy photos but it doesnt do the job for action shots & multi shots to capture the action.. ive just got back from currys & jessops to take a look at a few models, one i looked at was a sony with a zoom lense that was 10mega pixels & capable of taking 3 shots per second, it was £300, but forgot the model number.... my realistic budget is about £350, and ideas what i can get for this.. ? ill be taking photos out to 100yards max, but would like to be able to focus in close. thanks Quote Link to post Share on other sites

larsen 0 Posted October 23, 2008 Report Share Posted October 23, 2008 Was it the Sony Alpha A200? Good camera, probably not as good as the Nikon and Canon but at least it has image stabilisation. But as Mike says you'll need a decent lens, from what you say a zoom in the range of 200mm or 300mm. Realistically you are looking at £500 but look at the pics by DawnB and others, worth every penny. Glad this topic has come up i have been looking at buying a new camera was thinking of the Pentax K200D....10.2 MP comes with a 18-55mm lens and built in image stabiliser..Was wondering how this compares to the Nikon and Canon. I will say go for the Canon 40d mate Its the start of the "pro" range and cheaper than the 5d. The 40 d does all what you want and easy to use on manual mode. mattydski 560 Posted October 27, 2008 Report Share Posted October 27, 2008 I bought a cannon 10d slr when they were still mega money. i think i paid £1500 for the body alone. i use it for work, weddings, and hobbies and have done so for 6 years. Taking over from my film eos 10 that i had for 10 years previous. It is only 6mega pixel, but prints out to A3+ no problem. It was a serious hobby for a while. And still forms art of my work I investsted in pro quality 24-70 and 70-200, a 105 macro, 2 pro flashes, macro flash spot meter etc and have never looked back. They only limiting factor is me, and i have had a pro SLR since i was 12. Build quality is very good. Canon for me all the way. Matt Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I went for the Sigma lens to take out on hunting days ( less expensive than the canon version ) also on the canon 40d you do not really want to be changing lenses all the time as dirt on the sensor is a tw@t. It has a sensor cleaning cycle on start up and close down. If your using the 40d in the field I would also carry some eclipse fluid and swabs. Good choice overall and I am sure you will see some great results. The camera is quite easy to use. If you can invest in a battery grip or spare batteries.
