freeze branding dogs

just been thinking about some kind of way to kerb all these dog thefts and freeze branding came to mind, obviously they do it with horses and i know some people tatoo there dogs but a big freeze branding say on its back of maybe ya post code or something now that would stand out and be instantly noticable dont ya think ! anyone got any thoughts ?

Freeze branding dogs is not legal in the UK: a shame, as it makes a lot of sense. The Americans do their hunting dogs I've noticed: pretty useful I'd think when you consider the amount of miles they cover at times.

had some terriers have numbers tatooed in there ears a lot of years back when i had had some dogs stolen never got another 1 stolen my vet wasnt too happy about doing it especialy after my russel dog bit him twice

If you are having trouble with dog thieves I think it would work to help curb theft. Freeze branding dogs if fairly common here in the states.

hey if you had some dogs from an irishman that had been imported from the USA and were already freeze branded and you had a fella here that would testify to that effect, how could you be charged?

Good point Pops. Some of the laws here do our heads in completely! I'm going to look into it further as I'm not 100% sure of the legalities of it: there might be a way round other than what you are suggesting: it would be a bit difficult to claim that if it was a dog you had bred, was well known etc etc.

i know that ya can give a dog a tat in ear or on inner back leg i went to a terrier evening a few years back at jackson bridge if i remember right and they were promoting there then and actualy did a russell on stage but my point with the freeze brand is its instantly seen as a dog walking along ya dont have to approach the dog or person out with it just report it to the RIGHT PEOPLE !!!!!!!!! and get ya dog back im gunner try to find out the legals on in too but wouldnt be surrised if it is a no no in this lovley free country that we live in !!! ha ha

I remember reading a piece Clive Rees wrote about a lady who had puppies with docked tails, unfortunately for her she admitted it and was charged but i think the general gist of the piece aimed at if she'd said nothing and admitted nothing it was a case that would have been hard to prove. The other scenario given was she may well have bought the litter already docked, how then could she be charged ?

 

I guess some of these situations could be applied to freeze branding.

What a brilliant post that guy put on there explaining how to do it step by step: now, if it doesn't actually hurt the dog, I wonder how we in the UK would stand if we did it?

dont know about the legalities but its good idea....is it legal in France? thats nearer and easy enough to take a few dogs over and back in a weekend

 

i dont think postcodes would work, better to have a register somewhere with all the registered numbers listed, then if i bought your dog we could transfer ownership, also covers if you move house etc..........this would mean that the numbers could be quite low especially if we included leters rather than the 7-8 digits ina postcode? and if owners reported when a dog dies that number could be used again!

a lot of working registries here include tats and brands in the description information on individual dogs. the breeder/owner uses whatever they like some just numbers, some just initials (theirs or the kennel name) some use a combination a very few even use designs. those that have registered brands use the same thing they use on their cattle just freezing instead of hot branding. it seems a mess but it works pretty good.

hi compo taking dogs over to france would involve having to have a pet passport £120 at my vets but the real sting is ya cant fetch the dog back into the country untill 6 months after the injection date so if i had my dogs jabbed up i could take them the next day but they cant re-enter till april 2009 after the 6 month period they can come and go as ya please so we need to find a way of doing it here really for it to be starter
