Something new in my Larsen

Hi folks,

I went to check my Larsen late yesterday evening, the light was almost gone at this stage. I could see from a bit away one of the doors on the catch compartments had shut, but I couldn't see the white of a magpie in there. I walked on and found this grey git inside :D I'd forgotten my dispatching tool so I covered that catch section, gave him food & water and helped him along to the big nest in the sky early this morning. Besides rats I don't hate any of Gods creatures, these guys come real close though!

Well, I've had no catches in the Larsen in the last 10 days or so. I've moved it about the farm, baited the catch compartments etc. Mr Magpie is fit and well, I've added extra shelter to the Larsen and am very conscious of the weather and placement of it.

Tomorrow I think I'll move it to part of Dads farm. Just the other day there was some battle royale a couple of fields over. From what I could gather, a number of magpies had gone for cover under thick gorse bushes. Above them was a small sea of hooded crows :o Feck me but there was some racket, there was crows coming from miles around to investigate.

A happy hunting ground methinks :D

Dispatching tool???? Whats this? not being cheeky, just curious, as ive always just waded in, grabbed the bird with a speedy catch to avoid the beak, and knocked em on the head, off the side of the trap or whatevers closest!

I can't find a photo of one at the minute. It's a luxury for me more than a necessity. If you can imagine something like a pliers. Except the jaws are really thin, there are two bits of metal on the end of each jaw so once you get the birds neck between the jaws it won't slide out when you close it. So just have the birds neck in it, squeeze and he's a goner. Clean, quick and reliable which is what I like about it.

I started off wristing magpies out of larsons but then tried it of crows :icon_eek: i really don't recomend it as they put up a fair scrap :boxing: I shot them in the head through the bars with a .177 airpistol. Those diapatching tools are a great bit of kit, use them all the time pigeon shooting.
