Newish Rifle

i have put down a refundable deposit on a sako 75 in .22-250 and if all goes well with the plod this evening i should have the licence back at the end of next week. so for the gun anyway its not brand new but i love my sako quad and i wanted something similar from a centrefire, overall the condition is great but there a few scratches on the synthetic stock no problems there but i was on the phone today and asked how many rounds has been through it he says around 500 factory ammo , is there anything to worry about here on terms of accuracy. i was hoping that il be able to get atleast 2000 shots through it is that do-able . i wont be fireing fast stuff i dont think, sticking to 50-55gr heads. what did a sako 75 retail for when brand new i understand that they have come out with the sako 85 and they seem to go for £1100 to £1200 ?? . i got this sako 75 for around £700 plus £50+ for rings and bases is this a reasonable deal, im not wantin to be ripped off as i know you can pick up a brandnew ruger for £570 from my dealer up here.

500 rounds isn't that many, but before you commit take a few shots with it just to be sure, i wouldn't worry about a few little scratches on the synthetic stock, the sako 75 is an excellent model, and some say better built than the newer 85.......... :icon_eek:

So if she shoots good then you got a fair enough deal but then again you may squeeze a few pound out of him yet before its all over.......

best of luck, 2000 rounds should be do-able no problem as long as your not firing hot loads all the time some people say the .243 i have should only be good for 1500 2000 rounds i have a hell of alot more than that through it........believe me.......

don't roast the barrel if at the range and clean the gun properly, taking all necessery steps and you should have a shooter my friend.......... :victory:

Yep..you could be right but digital pics are easy these days... 500 should not be a problem..as long as it is correct and been looked after...Sako are pretty good so fingers crossed!

Difficult this one; but I am going off the 22-250, now don't get me wrong.... it is a great calibre and flat, fast, hits pretty hard ...but it is a little heavy on barrels...I have not heard of anyone saying it is great for anything but fox...and still debateable on that..and the ammo if ******* expensive and not that readily available!

So it starts to be a bit specialist..but if that is the speciality you want then cracker, it is very good at what it does!!!

Agreed. I'd take 223 or 243 over it for the extra versatility, but it's a very good fox calibre, no doubt. And if you like rabbit soup it works well there too.

ammo aint to much of a problem as im reloading and if i do run out of reloading materials my rfd has a good range of .22-250 as that is what he uses, he had a guy in the other day bought 200 rounds of .22-250 then he arrived back 4 days later and bought another 500 , unbeliveable not a clue what he was shooting , but its alot of money especialy up here as ammo is alittle bit more expansive. i know what you mean deker it doensnt have that many uses , we have no fox , no roe just rabbits it will certainly need to be just head shots with them , it is to be used at work also but il see how i get on if its no use accuracy wise, then it can be sent back hopefully. i presume most centrefires have a removable barrel ??

they wouldnt give me the 243 mr logic it being a deer caliber and me with not a deer in sight for 150 miles , so i stuk to the .22-250 my rfd seemed to hype it up alot so it seemed like a good idea. my friend has a 223 great caliber but theres no need us both haveing one so i went for a change we always go out together shooting so it wil be interesting to see the change between both guns.

Well ..I don't know the Shetlands; and I don't know anyone else who has bought a 22-250 for rabbits...ATB!!

PS ..as far as I am aware all rifles have a removeable barrel.. but the vast majority involve a specialist job!!

I absolutely don't understand why you are getting a 22-250 for use on bunny rabbits. If you're going to reload, get 22 Hornet and a 35gr tip. It will fly flat to 200 yards, knock over any rabbit you like , as well as foxes to boot.

Why on earth do you get a 22-250 for bunnies, and more importantly why on earth are they granting it? Anywhere else I know you'd get told to shove off...

Please explain, sorry if this sounds combative, I just don't get it at all.

no worries mr logic , ive got it for long range rabbit, hare, geese and what ever else comes my way also for humane dispatch at range as some of our sheep on our land are kept on islands nearby the island i live on it somtimes happens that they are out with the distance of rimfires to get a proper kill on banks steep rocks so i got the bigger centrefire for the added range and hitting power, i also have it to dispatch seals at work as the problem there is getting beyond the joke!!

Personally for the uses you have said I think a Sako is a tad OTT, great guns but you can do the same for hundreds less. The offer of a return is fine but involves a 1-for-1 variation so is a PITA.

Sakos are good rifles though, you won't go far wrong with one. My 22-250 was a sub half inch rifle with 50gr ballistic tips, often doing .3". In fact if they weren't all touching I was annoyed, so it certainly did shoot!

the only reason i stuck with the sako is beauce my rimmy is sako quad and i think its a great gun , and i just wanted something similar in a centrefire , up here in shetland i cant realy pick and choose the rfd only supplys ammo very rare he has guns in stock unless he getting them up for a customer. sub half inch i take that was a reloaded rounds?

i have it for fox and vermin on my ticket. i have shot the odd rabbit with it but it is for foxing and thats it really.

i could have got 223 which i would have been more then happy with but i like the flatness of the 22/250 and once the barrel wears out have it in a ai :icon_eek::laugh:
