Malt 379
After getting sick of seemingly endless rain & arguments about fat pet ferrets, we decided to go out today, and make the most of the dry weather. I promised myself last night, that I was going to take a shedfull of pictures to post here, whether we got lucky or not. We started out at 9:30, my mate Willie's 15 year old nephew Ross & me put our JRT's in his new, (well new to him!) box in the boot of the car. My Wife made us sarnies & got my 5 year old boy ready, and like hell was he going to go ferreting without his little cammo 'ferreting' hat! We took about 20 hemp nets, a machete, a hook, 4 ferrets & his brand spanking new 25 yrd quickset longnet. We then went to pick Willie up & his Lakey/JRT. We got to our first permission, unpacked everything and tried to find the old path that led from the carpark, under the railway track to our permission. I realised as soon as we started checking the kit, that I had forgotten the fecking camera! I must get used to taking it out with me! The path looked like it hadn't been used for years, it was a good job that Willie had spent the car journey to the place, sharpening the machete. We got there in the end, and come to a bury that all 3 young terriers started digging in to & yapping at. It was a nice bury, openish compared to most of the others, on a bank with a ditch to one side of it. We netted up with the purse nets & stuck Ross' big, friendly, poley hob Victor in. (Named after Victor Meldrew, from One foot in the grave, as when Ross got him at the welsh game fair last year, he squeaked & moaned for the first couple of nights! ) Nothing happened for a while, so I put my albino jill poppy, and one of her her kits, a big albino hob, imaginatively named, 'Hob,' behind her. Within a few seconds, you could here the thump, thump, thump coming from underground, and a rabbit popped into one of the nets & started screaming. Ross' dog Jack got to it first, and in it's excitement, somehow managed to knock the rabbit out of the purse net. All 3 dogs gave chase, but had to be called back sharpish, as the rabbit headed over the ditch & off in the direction of a cliff! We quickly reset the net on the hole, and was rewarded almost immediately with a bulging net. No mistake this time, as Willie was quick to get to it, and dispatched it quickly. I said to Ross, 'We'd have had that other bugger if we'd have set that bloody longnet along that ditch........' We then looked around for more buries, but were put off by the amount of cover everywhere. Willie suggested that we try somewhere else for an hour. We went to the next permission, had a cup of tea & a sarnie, then unpacked & went to find some rabbits. The place was very much the same as the last one, knee deep brambles, stinging nettles, and bracken around every hole. Willie muttered something about the rabbits not being stupid, choosing their buries where you couldn't see them! We decided to wade into some cover that the rabbits always seemed to bolt away into, and found an overgrown woodpile riddled with holes. The dogs were scrabbling away at the holes, so we started to clear around them, our intentions were to set as many purse nets as we could, then set the longnet in the field, parallel to the cover. As we were hacking away at the nettles, out bolted a pair, into the field, and into some different cover. If we'd have thought to set the longnet first, we'd have had the bloody pair of them! We then walked the rest of the field, and couldn't find anywhere else suitable for setting any nets, or the longnet, so we called it a day. It seems that our permissions aren't really suitable for summer ferreting, but it was brilliant to get out and do a bit, while having a laugh at the same time. At least we got 1, and the terriers got some more experience, as they are all about 10 months old and coming along nicely. They showed absolutely no interest in going for the ferrets, and the three of them seem to be marking. I've got high(er) hopes for this season as opposed to last, and hopefully we'll be able to phase out our schoolboy errors by the time the season really gets under way, hell we might even get 2 rabbits next time! I've got a mind like a sieve at the best of times, & when I've got ferrets, dogs, kids, nets & ferreting partners to sort out in the morning, taking pictures to prove myself a ferreter, is way down on the list of priorities! The one 8,581
I find if your cutting the cover back round holes your better leaving the ferreting till the next day but some bugger might beat you and ferret it first Quote Link to post
