i some times leave my jills in season all year and ive never lost one ,all mine average 10 plus before they die

Same here Sue,and I've never had one die on me either.

It makes me wonder how the humble ferret managed to survive before the invention of the jill jab or the infertile hob, what with aplastic anemia being so deadly. :hmm:

im going to jump in here.

the longer a jill is left in an oestral state the more vulnerable she becomes to infection.the vulva is very exposed and infection can find its way into the vulva and uterus,if she is then mated the uterine secretions become a perfect medium for the developing eggs and bacteria, you may well have a very sick jill 10 to 14 days after mating .she could develop a generalised infection and peritonitis and you could lose her.

a jill left in oestrus for any lengh of time can become seriously ill you may be lucky but is it worth the risk

Do you eve work your ferrets jojoa because in the old days I bet that not all ferrets were bred every year and also that not every jill died. They wouldnt of had injections then or vasectomised hobs

in the old days? :icon_eek: its 2008 and we are now civilised enough to have things called a 'v e t' thats VET

we dont have clubs and have to skin animals to eat

I know that but they managed so that means it is possible for us to manage. and it is not garenteed that you will lose a jill if its not brought out of season

if you care enough about an animal why leave them open to the risk?

Im not saying that I do its just that it must be possible to. Because of the past. I have only owned ferrets this year so havent got much experience on this topic but i just think if it happened back then then it must still be ok for it to happen nower days

I'm IN a Club.

My mother used to skin rabbits.

I used to eat them.
