1. PC died on me yesterday. One minute I was working like a trojan. Then the cursor wouldn't go fully up, down or across. I couldn't get at anything with it. Nothing for it but to hit the big button. I did.

Turned it back on and got stuck with " Compaq " and a flashing -, top left. That's all she wrote. MoBo f*cked?

2. So now I'm crawling about on the old Lap Top again. Problems abound, obviously. But here's the two main ones ~ sort of emminating from each other, actually:

A/ Norton's run out and wants me to pay for more of their shit. No way, obviously. Comes with the Install and I don't want it and hate it - obviously. Now it'll send me a virus and kill this f*kka completely - as they do.

B/ Don't suppose there's any way of weeding Norton out? They generally protect their files like children and refuse to let ye f*ck with them.

C/ Thus I'm thinking of just 'giving up' and returning this thing to it's factory settings. It came with PB's idea of XP on it and I can 'reinstall' that again with the key board. BUT: Will doing that give me my used up Memory back? Only this thing has f*ck all RAM, hence it's so vile.

Oh, and I've been trying to get AVG Free back, of course, Norton's having none of that - despite my having 'Turned it off'. It's a 41 Meg / 8 hour down load for me. So I was wondering about taking my little external HDD to the cafe in town and snatching AVG there, on their proper broadband. Opinions?

That should about cover it for now.

Thanks :)

The only way to get rid of Norton for good is to go to control panel and uninstall it. through add/remove programs.

I would connect your external hard drive to your laptop and save the download AVG free to the ext HDD over night.

Then, if you have the factory reinstall disks, wipe it. It is likely that Norton wil be on the reinstall disks. SO leave it on until you wipe it.

Remerber when you reinstall xp, you will need to also download all the updates, service packs etc. Which depending on the age of the disks, could also take a while.

If the only problem is speed and space, why not try going to add/install programs and remove everything you dont want. Then do a defrag. Also download a version of Adaware and run this as well. If is still slow, download a utility that checks your regristry. (shouldn't have to pay much)

I all else fails, print out a target, and prove those hornet doubters how much penetration you get.

If have any other questions, i might be able to help.

Matt

Cheers, lads. Oxo; Aside from the fact that I'd trust Symantec to remove themselves like I would shit ..... I don't have and 'documentation' with this set up because it's all factory installed and ye can only change it by reinstalling via the key board. Taking it back to factory settings. They bring Norton as standard. Anyway, not having anything to tell their system, they tried to sell me expensive stuff. FFS.

Matti; It doesn't even show up on Programmes to f*ck off. Just a sub station. And That protects itself. Can't get rid of that because Norton needs it.

Can't download AVG over night or period. Norton susses out what I'm doing and the file " corrupts " within a couple of %.

I habitually run as light as I practically can. A few albums of musics' worth of basic programmes isn't going to cause this pace.

Defrag? Nightly. Just after Disc Clean. I usually use micky, then micky And Auslogic Defrag. Then I run Eusing on my Registry.

And still I'm up to my eyes in shit and sinking :(

First PC? I have A XP disc. But that HDD already has Three XP's on it. About 3GB of space left. No wonder it crashed! I need a new ('old style') HDD. Only I can't even figure how to get the old one out. I looked for a manual on " Cpmpaq Presario ", but there's about a million different models and no way to check which mine might be.

Regarding " Safe Mode "; It scares me when ever people mention that. I don't know what it is. How to start it. Or how to get out of it :(
