Tumbleweed 1
Now my ferrets are busy raising their kits and I'm not taking them out has anyone got any idea where I can get fresh rabbit from? I don't know any other ferreters in this area to ask. I've seen blocks of rabbit meat at the pet shop but I want to get whole, fresh rabbit ideally. The butchers don't have any, I've already asked about. Quote Link to post

stubby 175
most butchers will order it in, if they dont keep it in stock, its normally imported from china though, a lot smaller than our rabbits, I checked on prices through a butcher friend, they wanted £70!!!!! for 30 rabbits, Id rather feed dry Quote Link to post

You could have some if you weren't too far away. Quote Link to post

Tumbleweed 1
Yikes. Maybe hubby should go out with just the kits dad and see what they can catch without the jills helping. I might get some of the rabbit mince stuff from the petshop as it's only 50p a pack. When feeding dry to the kits is it best to soften it with water, or perhaps lactose free milk? Can they have dry from around three weeks or should dry to provided later on and only raw meat given at first? I want to stock up this week if possible so I can start offering tastes next weekend. I'm in Suffolk. Edited June 8, 2008 by Tumbleweed Quote Link to post

I'm in Suffolk. we went out yesterday and took 5 hobs, to try re stocking the freezer, we went to an area that holds plenty of rabbits, yet none would "bolt" we ended the day with 8 very small babies, that the ferts carried out, really need fast/quick jills to bolt rabbits, the hobs were more interested in shagging than rabbits, and using 1 hob per warren just dont get them bolting, just hole hoping Quote Link to post
Tumbleweed 1
Another problem with taking him out at the moment is that our hob is a new addition this spring so we have no idea how well he works. He's pretty lively though so I have high hopes that he'll do well with the jills. Quote Link to post

If you cant get rabbit use chicken , dry foods no good they wont do anywhere near as well on even soaked kibble, fresh minced beef from the butchers also, i was feeding 12 kits 4 pound off meat a day at the 8 week stage , they eat like its going out of fashion Use fattier meats from the butchers as very lean meat my lead to osteodystrophy in the kits rabbits better if you can get it Quote Link to post

IF you MUST feed dry... soften it with water.. even lactose reduced milk might not settle in bellies that small.. Quote Link to post
The one 8,552
See if theres a frozen dog food suppliers near you they will deliver and you could use that as a stop gap im paying £8.50 for over 10 kilo's of frozen mince for the dogs Quote Link to post
Tumbleweed 1
Our local independent butcher keeps back old meat for dogs, I've already got a fair bit of liver and offal from him which I'm feeding the jills at the moment, mixed with other meat bits. He's gives us a couple of bags free when I get my own meat from him. I've found only independent butchers will do so though, not chains. I will hunt around locally and see what else I can find. I don't really want to start the kits on dry food if I can help it. Thanks for all the ideas . Quote Link to post
