byrney 2
Went out at the weekend with the ferrets and the dog. I've never been out in the breeding season before but the landowner wants rid of the rabbits. There where plenty of rabbits about when i arrived so i set up my long net and let the ferrets loose. The rabbits soon started bolting but rather than run out to the field they just went from hole to hole, we put another two ferrets down but still the same. Is this because the rabbits are young, has anyone else experienced this ? We later tried one ferret down a threee holer and bolted one, my mate got it with the 4/10 but when we had a closer look one of its eyes was half missing and it was'nt a fresh wound from the gun, and on the way back to the car i spotted an adult rabbit and i'm 100% sure its eyes where swollen. jazz_11 5
on the dvd i got they set up a long net but then set up a shorter long net through the middle... so that would stop the bolting from hole to hole. hope it helps jazz Quote Link to post
moxy 617
I dont think that mixy ever goes away, Just has its outbreak does the damage then lays dormant for a while. We notice on a lot of the places we go to control the rabbit populations that this is the case. If we get 2 years without an outbreak in a certain area, then we are lucky. You can definately gaurantee there will be a spot in the third These outbreaks have been observed in seperate areas some 20 miles appart where there has been a heavy rabbit problem. One particular place, Mixy will anhialate almost everything in the second year, (although you will find the odd mixy rabbit throughout any year), Then the population soon recovers and becomes a little more resilient. Dont know how this fairs where you are? I had the first mixy rabbit a couple of months ago, Bloody awfull way to go. Quote Link to post
stubby 175
hole hoping is'nt because they are young, its because they want to stay alive!! look on it from bunny's point of view, he can either bolt out into the open, where he's heard all the noise you lot have been making, smelt you etc, or he can bolt down another hole, that he knows is safe as stated, put a couple of stop nets within the longnetted area, and also purse net every 5th hole within the area, that way you can backnet them if they start hole hoping, also rabbits are more prone to sit tight in the burrows with young in the nest Quote Link to post

It would be a real problem laying purse nets or a long net through the middle due to the bramble, i could clear it then go back but its getting time unfortunatelly. Good news about the the mixy in the previous posting by moxy " (although you will find the odd mixy rabbit throughout any year), Then the population soon recovers and becomes a little more resilient." I had visions of all the rabbits being wiped out again before winter. It hit hard round my part of the world last season. Quote Link to post

byrney 2
mixy is a f*****g nasty way to go, and i have had the hole hopping problem, i reckon its cos theyre young and more afeared of the outside world than the older and bolder bunnies, not had a problem with the bunnies before now, but even tho we had been quite outside the bury they just didnt want to bolt... ah well, give em time... or dont i reckon its cos theyre young and more afeared of the outside world than the older and bolder bunnies Quote Link to post
Dowen Pest Control Solutions 0
Trouble with myxomatosis is caused by the the myxoma virus this mutates and changes so when you get a lul its due to risistance in the rabbits then when the strain mutates it will cause another out break so thats why it will never go away. Last year was a bad year due to being being so wet and increase in mosquitoes population which spread the virus as well as fleas. Edited May 9, 2008 by Dowen Pest Control Solutions Quote Link to post
