collie greyhound pup behaviour

Recommended Posts

Hi, just a question to see other peoples experiences. I have a pup coming on , he is 19week old, and is a bearded collie greyhound x beddlington greyhound. I have just brought a beddlington saluki pup on, and what a difference,.

Baz my new pup, will not go no more than 10yrds away from me while out in the meadows, and almost walks on my toes, i often kick him in the face as he is always under my feet. Has anybody else noticed this, and is it because of the collie in him? Will he adventually push on , and go sniffing, or will he be a sight dog, who waits to be slipped.

My beddlington saluki is definatly a mouching dog, and she has always gone off with her nose down and sniffed out her prey. Cheers Russ

What age did you get the pup? Had he been well socialised before you got him or was he just shut in a kennel all the time? Is he very submissive to you in general? Do you play with him or just take him out and say not a lot to the pup. Have you tried throwing a ball for him to go and fetch and play with. Does he act scared when you are out? Have you told him off for running too far ahead at any time? Has he had a bad experience if he has gone ahead of you: like being startled by a strange dog/person etc.

Give us an in depth picture of the pup in general life: how he is in different situations. Most importantly: what age did you start taking him out? If you've only just started taking him out then he will have missed out on that early learning curve I mentioned in the Hancock dog thread. It is vital to get pups out as soon as possible if they are not to be scared of new things.

I think it's nothing to do with the collie blood, my collie grey is very independant, occasionally a bit too much.

It's just him, i would'nt worry about it at his age. I would just have him around you as much as possible, play with him, give him as much confidence as you can.

He'll find his feet soon enough.

think the boy means he is doing so bye accident alot of pups are like this to start with all the whippets iv had were the same never left my side hardly ever to start with if the girl take's them up the field she cant let them of as they just turn and run home . i prefer a pup to be like this less chance of him being the run across the field to a kid or other dog type save some hastle all round . i just got mine started of playing fetch usualy if the other dogs mooching the pup will soon follow on id say just let the pup come out its shell i never have my dogs leashed or very rarely.

whats his confidence like generally?

have you tried taking him out by himself?

19 weeks very young yet

Yeah Robin, we only got out on our own, i wouldnt take him with the otheres. His con fidence if full on, you know the usual cheeky behaviour, thieving etc.... fine like that.

Kicking a 19 week old pup in his face becouse he follows you on your feet? And you want him to be your loyal friend that works for you? Good luck :censored:

Dont talk like a sweat gland!!! Everybody knew what i mean!

Yeah guys, he gets played with 24/7. There are 3 of us in the family, who all care and love him. He has more toys that mothercare!!

He does fetch and fetchs well. I didnt get him till he was 16 weeks, and yes he was just kenneled, maybe this is the reason. And yes i know he will be a loyal dog, we can see that now, thanks to those with a descent answer...
