Appreciate the input and help but I rather think after due deliberation it will be one of the old favourites, .243 or .308. I quite favour the .308 but my FLO doesn't like the .308 for Fox (overkill he says) so odds are I will end up falling in line with most of the UK again and getting another .243.

One more question..

What do you think of this package (.243)

I see the weak link as the scope/mounts, I did have one of these EXACT scopes, (it's on my lads Gamo Air rifle now) and whilst it offers good value for money I would prefer something a little better on a .243!

Thanks everyone!!!

how about a 6.5 x 47 Lapua, I think Baldie has one, and I believe it's a winner!

This is just what I was looking for on this thread.....I had never even thought of this one, thanks for bringing it to the table but there is nobody around my way that carries this stuff..cheers though!!!

That looks like a nice combo Deker, as you say the only weak point being the Scope. Good Quality components otherwise.

I had a look at the Howa range in Litts, the last time I was there and they seem to be very solidly constructed as well as having a good feel to them. The thumbhole stock with a stainless barrel makes for a good looking piece of kit.

Doesn't Mr Logic have a Howa?

He has the Heavy Barrel Laminated, looks good and works well, (would have to suggest more of a range gun), it's too heavy by a mile for me, I'm just a big girlie really, want someting light and easy to cart around the fields!

You may have already looked here but its the lightest rifle they do it seems.

Available in .243, as its in German Im not sure whether it would cost more to have a non standard calibre.

The Howa range is readily available, they are imported by Highland Outdoors AFAIK, then sent to Wildcat, who do the predator mods, for screwcut.

My Howa is a beast for carrying about, in that I have to rest it on a fencepost or its big bipod in order to be able to shoot it even vaguely accurately. Prone, it's a joy to shoot and the action mated to a light barrel would make a great hunting rifle.

But, Remington do the SPS for the same sort of price, and it will probably outshoot the Howa by a slim margin, and it can be customised where the Howa can't, really.

Remington would be my choice I think, but my Howa is my favourite rifle, so I guess that's a strong endorsement... :)

that howa does look good value, as a kit, and the nikko scopes are very good really for the price!

the thing is howa state a guarantee that they'll shoot 1 1/4" groups at 100yards, i don't consider that much of a group!!

i no a lad with a howa 243 mate its a nice bit of kit thats for sure. he told me the 1st thing he done was get the gunsmith to do a little work on the trigger and it was sorted. he said 100yards half inch groups pretty easy even with factory ammo.

 get this done he said and the rifes grouping improved over night :drink:

Just been reading the posts, i have been going through similar deliberations recently my self. I am in the same boat as everyone else, i want lots of kit and dont want to spend serious money. So after trawling through many local vendors, this is want i ended up with, and the prices i paid.

Sauer 202 s/h with 150 shots only fired-£470 synthetic .243, detach mag, screwcut, set trigger. etc VGC

PES st/st Moderator painted black!!! but £90

Nikko diamond ex ebay 4-12 x 56 £57 delivered.

all in £617.

Very happy with package on the quality front, have yet to zero, but expect it to be bang on with premium ammo.

Any thoughts ?
