dog whistle

Recommended Posts

I use a sheepdog whistle, although the metal ones aren't as good as the plastic ones. I have used a variery of commands on the whistle, recalls, lefts, rights and downs. They are very good when a dog is at a distance :victory:

same here in never heard of anyone using a dog whistle for a lurcher

Heres a scenario, your are out hunting and your quarry breaks cover 50 yards to the dogs right but the dog is looking left, a shout won't do much good a but recall followed by a right whistle may add to your bag..............

I've used a variety of whistles eg buffalo horn, shepherds whistle (or at least I tried to get a note from it) and silent whistle but I find the dogs work better to my own, mouth only, whistle. I guess the preference over conventional or silent would depend on whether or not you wanted to be heard. :whistling:

Not everyone works from a slip, I was trying to highlight the positive use for a whistle............

it deff has a positive use i agree but i never heard of anyone using one for lurchers over here.I reckon you might draw you cover dogs out from the cover by using it which could be a problem

I have trained my collie cross to a whistle just for recall. But I could easily extend the training to include left right stay. I use hand signals for that at the moment.

Do you do any daytime work or is it all lamping?

i hunt daytime aswell i hunt cover for foxes and rabbits with my terriers

Oh yeah, sorry I forgot.

Happy hunting ;)
