Waz 4,293
Got a cock and a chicken yesterday, the hen was already laying and this morning she presented me with another egg; which ive taken and is now safe in a box. Fingers crossed tomorrow or the next day ill get another. I want to try and get enough for her to bring on some chicks, some question is, shall I see to see if she will lay some more and once I know she hasnt gone off laying put this first egg and whatever others back under her? Is this the right thing for me to do? If she dont lay no more a mate is setting some eggs up in a short while and he'll have some room. Im told the 'strain' is good for rearing, as they arent bred for their eggs or for the table.
stubby 175
I would have thought, you would have replaced the eggg's with dummy egg's, to make her continue laying?
Waz 4,293
Ok will put a normal chicken egg under her tomorrow.
littlefish 598
If you take away the eggs as they are laid do you put them in an incubator if you want them tho turn into chicks? Is it the heat of the chicken sitting on them that makes the chick grow inside providing they are fertilized? Does it not work if they get cold?
Waz 4,293
Yes I think,,, thats why eggs can be posted before incubation. Am I right?
stubby 175
the eggs can be stored, until you are ready to put them back under the hen, there was a story, couple of years back, about a guy who incubated some eggs from tesco's, and had chicks hatch
Waz 4,293
Got another lunch time, so put a regular hen egg under her and now her 2 will be in a mates incubator after egg washing tonight.
night moocher 41
you can keep the eggs for weeks before she goes broody, just put them in a box in the kitchen or shed, if she goes broody let her sit shop eggs for a day then put her eggs back .done it loads of times with no problems. Guest basil46
Isn`t keeping the eggs in an incubater defeating the object? By storing the eggs cold then putting them back under the hen, the chicks hatch at about the same time. If the first and last chick hatched a week apart, the youngest wouldn`t survive because the older ones get the food. basil.

Basil, the 2 in the incubator will stay there, as its at a mates and he has other eggs in there. The hen is still laying & im replacing with chicken eggs till she goes broody. skycat 6,174
Don't forget to turn the eggs you are keeping for the broody: Lay them on their sides in a cool place and turn a half turn every day. Stops the membrane sticking to the shell.
