Malt 379
The age old question of which calibre, has been around for years. The question of which calibre, comes up every few days, and while the good folk on here don't mind sharing their collective knowledge at the time of asking, it does tend to become a bit tedious. So here's the chance for some of you guys with good knowledge of the mechanics of pellet drop, power drop off, etc, to write some words of wisdom on the subject. Everyone's got their preferences when it comes to calibre, the idea of this thread is to build up information on the different calibres, so people will have something to read through when it comes to the 'What calibre should I go for' question. jamie g 17
well i use to hunt with 22cal when i was around 16 to 20 then i had a days shooting with my brothers brand new air arms s410k in 177cal. after that i got a 177 daystate harrier pcp. then i move on to a air arms s410k. ive had 2 s410k in 177 now and my old man still has one to. ive had rapid mk2 in 177 and 22cal the only reason i got a 22cal again was to fac it. but as i hadnt got round to the forms at the time i swapped it for the 177 rapid mk2. i perfer the 177 cal in 12ftlb as its flatter shooting then 22. plus i think its more forgiving then the 22 in flight. i would never go back to 22 cal now in 12ftlb form. as i just find it sloppy in flight. people say that its harder hitting then 177 which it maybe. but i find 177 on rabbit and winged vermin spot on and the tree rats to. now for fac air then thats a different ball game in 22cal its the best as 177 in fac air uses more air. plus the pellet will go though the vermin more then 22 fac air. which could be a downfall as the damage isnt as bad as 22 so the vermin kill rat would be better with 22 then at those power levels. 22 fac air is flat shooting to. and as flat if not flatter the 12ftlb 177. it hits very hard and ups the overall killing range of a 12ftlb 22 by twice the amout if not more! by this i mean 22 in 12ftlb i think is 35 yards max. where 22 fac air at 30 ftlb can kill over 60 yards. but only take those shoots on when there is little wind in the air. so my vote is 177 in 12ftlb and 22 in fac form Edited April 1, 2008 by jamie g Quote Link to post

Deker 3,491
Come on guys! This question gets asked time & time again! Get typing! Yep..sure does..and there will never really be an answer, .22 for hunting and .177 for target is the time honoured tradition. Whilst I would still tend to agree with this, what is best for what......this must surely be down to who's hand the gun is in and their specific, detailed, use and requirements! All the best for trying but I think this will be a really tricky one!! Quote Link to post
targa 5
Straightshooters did it for you http://www.straightshooters.com/navagation...selections.html Click the gun of your choice and you can see the energie and velocity of different calibers and pellets. the pellet with the highest ballistic coefficient is the best for hunting. Nice one targa! That's the sort of thing I was on about. Not trying to resolve the 'Which is better' argument, just trying to get as much info as possible so people will have something to go on.
