Mackerel Milts what are they ?

Recommended Posts

What the feck are mackerel milts ??

Went into Morrisons last night and there was this tray on the fish counter that looked as though someone had spewed up on it. It was reduced from £1.78p to 9p it made me laugh so much I had to buy it, my wife did not want to look at it.

The tray was labled Mackerel Milts.

Lad behind the counter said to have it on toast

It's the galnd in the male fish that contains their love juice to put it mildly, MEANT to be very good for you, but iwouldn't eat it, creamy in colour. If you don't like anyone buy some milt and put it in the air vents in the front of there car smell will linger for months...........

ive been a qualified fishmonger for 20 years so feel qualified to comment,as stated the mackerel milt is male mackerel sperm,it actually is very good to eat, full of omega3 and all in all a good food. it has been introduced in recent times to take the presure off the herring stocks much of which was fished just for their 'milt',it was in past times incorrectly called herring roe.the mackerel milt is best micrwaved til firm,3 minutes, then mash with a fork addinfg a little white pepper and a knob of butter, spread on toast and then pop back under the grill to brown.

Thanks for that explanation FF I was just thinking it can't be rubbish if its marked up at £1.78p for a small tray.

I still could not bring myself to eat it though.

The dogs and the cat had a little each and loved it.

Do you think it will make em swim better?
