One for Gnasher...Bermondsey boxing and poverty

Recommended Posts

Smashing bit of film mate good find that is thanks for putting it up.

Long before my time Joe Rolfe his grandson or great grandson it might be Steve is still well known in the area.

I spent a lot of time in that gym when Gary Davidson had it the Old Kent Road back then was a rough old place the Henry Cooper gym was just along the road as well, quite often the only way to get any peace and quiet on the Old Kent road back then was to go up in the Becket and have a fight  ....unlike the Henry Cooper and infact most other gyms the Beckett had fighters of all levels pros as well as unlicensed even bare knuckle fighters trained in there so it was an unusual atmosphere at times.....most fighters out of Rotherhithe and Bermondsey would start off at the Fisher Club as amateurs and if you was halfway decent you'd walk into the Beckett not old enough to buy a pint but slip upstairs for a tear up,it had a lot of character that pub/gym.

🤣🤣🤣You beat me to it.Only time he went into bandit country was to bash up Millwall

I actually spent quite a bit of time down there apart from the boxing i used to keep some dogs at the back of my sisters pub which was right on the corner of the one way bit in Deptford ( 4 minute drive from the Rotherhithe Tunnel as long as i went straight there 🤣 )....in all honesty ive always had a begrudging respect for Bermondsey folk,Rotherhithe etc...they was always very staunch together people i wasnt liked locally but i understood it and no problem.....even the local plod were loyal to their own i remember plenty of times getting stopped in my motor in Bermondsey and getting told to f**k off back over my side.....even their plod preferred their own criminals

Bloody hell I've had to go on to Google maps...don't want to upset you cocknees...lol

I wont bore you with the old " not all Londoners are Cockney's " carry on or i know Wilf will be sitting their thinking " ffs Gnasher you are so predictable " 🤣

Regardless of that its a funny one as Millwall itself is in East London in the borough of Tower Hamlets yet the football club is in deep " bandit country " as its been described......they always was a f****d up confused bunch of people !

And only londoners can call the team west ham United and it was east ham ?.the area

Not to be too much of a dry lunch but historically we started off as Thames Ironworks which was in West Ham....the word Ham is an old word for a dry area of land between marshes and rivers...making East and West Ham self explannatory....in the very early days we played at the old Memorial Ground which was nearer West Ham in modern day Plaistow,an E13 postcode......whereas East Ham,Beckton etc is E6......add to that the Boleyn Ground was an E13 postcode yet East of Green Street.....Green Street being the recognised boundary between East and West..................and i said South Londoners were a confused bunch 🤣

Not to mention Millwall having not played in Millwall for over 100 years started off in East London founded by a bunch of Scottish workers from a jam factory before taking the " Rovers " off their name and calling themselves " The Lions " instead.....f****n fannies ! 🤣

Whenever I'm in that area it always makes me laugh when I see the boozer that's painted Blue and Claret(cant think of the name of it now).Always wondered how it ever ended up that colour being in that area and didn't get burnt down
