Long before my time Joe Rolfe his grandson or great grandson it might be Steve is still well known in the area. I spent a lot of time in that gym when Gary Davidson had it the Old Kent Road back then was a rough old place the Henry Cooper gym was just along the road as well,quite often the only way to get any peace and quiet on the Old Kent road back then was to go up in the Becket and have a fight ....unlike the Henry Cooper and infact most other gyms the Beckett had fighters of all levels pros as well as unlicensed even bare knuckle fighters trained in there so it was an unusual atmosphere at times.....most fighters out of Rotherhithe and Bermondsey would start off at the Fisher Club as amateurs and if you was halfway decent you'd walk into the Beckett not old enough to buy a pint but slip upstairs for a tear up,it had a lot of character that pub/gym. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
