STOP!!!How long will this “Modern Slavery” go on?Everyone uses that term, everyone.I have met more illegal immigrants than the average bloke, way more,of loads of different nationalities, and not one of them was a “slave”,in fact they mostly paid to get to the UK,they paid to be so called slaves, they weren’t transported below deck shackled on the La Amistad against their will, they payed to be smuggled into the UK any which way as long as they arrived there, that’s the truth of the matter and it was always consensual.

Calling it modern “Slavery” is making out the illegals were dragged kicking and screaming to the UK against their will mate, that’s not the case, they are always complicit.

Haverhill, the town in that report is but a hop, skip and a jump down the road from me, done a bit of work over there a few years back. It's an absolute shite hole! Some of the sleeping arrangements mentioned in that article would be considered the height of luxury by some of the natives 😁 no-one, and I mean no-one has ever uttered the words "do you fancy a night out in haverhill"....

I don't agree. There are modern slaves in the fishing industry. In the old days if you were a trawlerman, you got a share of the catch and the skipper got two shares. An ordinary bloke could make serious money as long as they didn't blow it on drugs or drink etc. Then the skippers realised they could employ foreigners for a tenner an hour. Then a fiver an hour. Then a few quid a trip. I know of foreigners being beaten up, constantly bullied and physically abused. One skipper used to throw the few quid he owed them onto the deck to humiliate them. Others received no money at all. Some were injured, but the skippers kept on fishing rather than lose fishing time taking them to port for hospital treatment. These are cases which have been proved in court . People I know personally.

So it does go on.

I would think it happens a lot in the sex industry as well.

You can never underestimate how low people can stoop where money is involved.

I have met a couple of Filipinos working on Brit boats Juk,they have it cushy compared to one young Filipino I heard of working on a Panamanian registered boat, his first trip raped by a shipmate and thrown overboard, horrific.

as for the guys you know they can walk away anytime they want, they aren’t true slaves, they paid agency fees in their homelands to get a work permit for the UK.

No I mean  know the skippers. Scary feckers who have no moral compass and no or little fear.

Some Thais actually swam for the shore to escape the conditions on the ship. Their abuse was proven in court, but the skipper got off with a slap on the wrist.

Probably Filipinos Juk,Thais aren’t a known seafaring race whereas Filipinos pay the POEA in Manila to get a visa for UK boats.

You may well be right. I got into a pigeon English  chat with some Filipino trawlermen up in Ullapool. They had just about emptied a couple of charity shops up there. One of them insisted I talk to his Mrs on video chat on his phone. A beaming lady with half a dozen nippers greeted me with big smiles, waves and hellos. Quite a nice moment.
