Accessibility , locks, moorings , etc, or is it as simple as having a map of canals and rivers and setting off ? Looks like a great adventure without leaving the UK ! All depends on your time constraints really daughter has places to be and people to meet (boats being sold )so on quite a tight schedule but generally people just choose a loop that takes roughly how long they have to spare from here a typical loop journey would be about a fortnight up the Severn round canals and back down the Avon and some people just keep on going and have no home base daughters here at the moment lol
