eastcoast 4,504
I've been recording Out of Town. With fresh eyes 40+ years on was maybe remembering it through rose coloured glasses, still enjoyable though. The Holy Grail was on last week, Coney Dogs. Jack informed us that most dogs that are referred to as lurchers these days (1980's) are nothing more than mongrels. A true lurcher can only be a F1 hybrid between a greyhound and another breed that has nose and brains, because the pure greyhound lacks both There was then footage, brilliant footage, of the dogs of Len "Ginger" French, all F1 hybrids. 1 by 1 the various true lurchers were called out into a paddock with Jack informing us of the cross. Lab x greyhound, deerhound x grehound, saluki x grehound etc. He changed his mind a few times. I'm sure they were all for sale at the right price Then the coney dog. Once again some great footage captured of old stamp white hunt terriers in kennels. Before the smarter, leggier types superseded them before the black dogs superseded the leggier white dogs. The sire chosen to put over a whippet bitch was a nice Sealyham/Russell type. No doubt a grafter and not a cross were speed is of the highest priority but still, using a short legged dog is stacking the odds in favour of the rabbits. What a cynical old t##t I've become
gnipper 6,763
I've been recording and watching it too and I'm sure he was just winging it for half of the stuff he says. I listened to a podcast that explained how they were recorded with a camera with no sound and the sound effects were added on later back in a studio so could explain why he got a bit mixed up with the voice over?

Often I think he was just repeating stuff that he had been told growing up and perhaps had not much practical knowledge of? But, give me that over Country File any day! I also used to love watching him on How, tea time on ITV.

eastcoast 4,504
A typical fascinating 1 was on the lost practice of threshing corn. Jack started with, these days it is often said that civilisation is on the threshold of destruction, then went on to explain where the term threshold came from. This was the 1980's and that was what we were being told by the media. If nuclear armageddon (the Cold War) didn't end us then drug addiction would (heroin) , but no matter what, having sex would kill us (AIDS). We just ignored it and cracked on.
