Every year in a friendly, but they both compete in the FA Cup and could be drawn together. We still wouldn’t class it as a Derby. Newcastle is a city, Gateshead is a Town. How can two cities without even a common border such as Newcastle and Sunderland be considered a Derby , you might as well say Newcastle and Portsmouth is a Derby , it’s nonsensical. Cheers.. No it isn't, again, you don't have to be in the same city for it to be called a derby, you just have to be geographically close to each other, 15 mile between Newcastle & Sunderland is geographically close enough to be classed as a derby. Ok , if I had said when I started this thread that I was looking forward to the Newcastle / Sunderland derbies you would have said it’s not a Derby , but never mind, you’ve got what you wanted. Ill look forward to going to the Newcastle Sunderland games next season if I can get tickets, you can call them derbies , I won’t. You got your bite, I’ll leave it at that . Cheers. No, I wouldn't because I'd always class it as a Derby. If Gateshead miraculously worked their way up to the Premier League you can bet your last dollar you'd be then classing it as a Derby with Newcastle.

It is and has always been known as a West Yorkshire derby. Thats a rivalry like Leeds biggest rivalry as always be man utd there not the same city or county but a roses derby in utd case or Burnley v Blackburn east lancs there not the same town or city but some class it as a derby it's not city utd or villa Birmingham is and back in the day when I went to games I have only been to one true derby the Bristol one and it has a totally different feel to it for some reason you could feel the hostile atmosphere miles from the ground nothing I had felt before even before playing are local rivals

Leeds biggest rivals will always be Man UTD as you say, even though Man UTD will see Liverpool has their biggest rivals.
