It’s not a “Derby” ,Steve mate. Newcastle is a one club city, as is Sunderland. To me, Derby’s are between clubs in the same city. A great rivalry, yes ; but a “derby” ? No . Cheer

Some people are on the pitch  they think it’s all over  It is now  tell him to come back charts lad

For as long as ive been following football Leeds rivals were always Man Utd,thats doesnt make it a derby game ! If you think that West Ham and Brentford..... Millwall and Arsenal .....Wolves and

But its still not a derby.....my Hammers v Spurs is a not particularly pleasant rivalry..........but its not a derby.

Derby games are brilliant, the build up in the pubs and workplaces, neighbourly disputes,families/friendships torn apart......rivalries are just watered down derbies for me.....how can you have a derby game between sets of fans from different areas.

Bear with me a minute but that to me sounds exactly like what would be exactly the build up to Newcastle Sunderland games .

Mackems an geordies are the same to everybody bar the mackems an geordies haha

When I first went to contract for the Saudi Arabian Air Force, the American housing Officer thought it would be a good idea to billet two lads from Newcastle and one from Sunderland in the same apartment “ as we were from the same place “ !

As it turned out me and the lad from Sunderland hit it off and are still best mates 47 years later !

Cheers.

They are are a Derby as they are geographically close to each other, you don't have to be from the same city.

So every 2 football matches between London clubs are derbies ? as lifelong West Ham fans we have absolutely no problem with Fulham,Charlton even Arsenal or Chelsea..........but Millwall we despise with every fibre of our being.

Watford are geographically close should we book them as a derby game as well ?........do Man Utd look on Stockport County or Oldham as derby games,of course they dont.

One club cities do not/cannot have true derby games thats just life.

Massive club !!!

I use the “ adults for a fiver , kids for free “ line often at work lol

“Cheesy chips for a pound”

All kidding aside, when away supporters come to Sunderland they fly into Newcastle AirPort or get the train to Newcastle Central Station , drink in the Bigg Market or the Quayside, stay in hotels in Jesmond and get the Metro to Sunderland for the game !

Cheers.

Yeah, read up on the definition. You don't necessarily have to be from the same city for it to be called a derby game.

How can they when they are miles apart......my ol fella used to have murders with his best friend who was a Millwall fan, they lived 200 yards apart, both worked down Smithfield, both drank in the same boozers etc....if close proximity doesnt matter i might as well book Millwall/Spurs/Chelsea/Arsenal/Orient/Charlton/Fulham/Brentford/Palace/QPR.........all as derby games !

You're not a regular week to week fan of an English football club are you mate i can just tell

Fans have followed and observed the cultures/traditions/habits of their clubs for generations.....the English dictionary has never even come into it !

I don't think you are as much as you think mate, take for instance Leeds UTD, it's classed as a derby when they play Huddersfield Town. It is and has always been known as a West Yorkshire derby.

FFS, Newcastle and Gateshead are about 50 yards apart but nobody would call that a “derby “.

Cheers.

Of course they would if they actually played, when did they last play?
