I'm always staggered at the courage of men and women during the war.

Imagine Paddy and his mates flying those flimsy tin boxes being shot down and then back out again.

Imagine men and women being parachuted behind enemy lines in darkness. I'm scared just thinking about it.

Amazing people rise to the surface in emergencies.

I was in Grangemouth on the river Forth last year and they have a memorial to over 70 pilots who died.., mostly just in training. As well as British there were Kiwis, Aussies, Belgians, Czechs, Poles, Dutch, Irish, American and Canadians all trained and died there. I believe although you could be conscripted to the RAF, aircrew were all volunteers. Between the UK and her allies tens of thousands of airmen died in training and accidents.
Hemingway may well be the last of ‘the few’ but the efforts and sacrifice of a great many young men from all over, was absolutely enormous.
Incidentally, I think I’d rather have gone up in a spitfire and at least had sense that I could fight back. The guys from bomber command that flew night after night, and probably lost friends and comrades daily yet still went out again to face the barrage of German guns must have been terrified and over 50,000 men were lost flying bomber raids over Europe. May they all rest in peace.

I’d never heard of the old lad before today, but what a hero !

Shot down four times, one time his ‘chute didn’t open and he landed in a tree !

Him and his squadron downed over 90 enemy aircraft in a week.

During the Battle of Britain, he was flying five sorties a day, at the age of 21 !

A hero, a true hero !

Cheers.
