Test the batteries with a meter it's not unknown to have a new battery thats dud. Turn the box on put in near a TV that is on if no static you have a duff connection somewhere. 

Take the screw out of the middle of the on/off depth wheel then remove the mother board out and look for broken wire.

(Little tip when resembling and putting the screw back in put little dab of wifey's nail varnish on the screw to stop it coming loose out in the field.)

If you have static near TV then check the collar batteries. Clean the copper pin in the centre of the collar with emery nail file.

The most common fault with Mk1 box in my option is usually the on/off switch depth control they can be bought from eBay but are little trick to desolder, and is best to desolder and remove the speaker to do this job.
