gnasher16 31,261
Not sure ive understood the project correctly here but my experience of aquarium filters is that unless you're forming some kind of circle of water flow you're going to get dead spots....if water isnt directly flowing through the rocks i cant see how it can be filtered and will just stagnate surely.....or have i missed something, just ignore me if im talking bollocks i dont normally do Friday nights indoors

I'm practically losing all grip of what I'm supposed to be up to myself here, Gnash! As far as I can recall though, I think the idea is to have ..... Yes! That's it: Just like on my turtles tank. But, on a tiny little scale and like with a water permeable pile of rocks on top. But, yeah: In flow pipe and out flow pipe both in the same water. And with the force those pipes'll be sucking / blowing at and the tiny bit of water involved? I really can't see dead spots being able to exist.

Can't figure that out Idea is this: I fit an aquarium filter (Very strong one!) to the bottom of the box. Fit a mesh, above the in / out flow pipes. Then, put rocks on top of that. Forming a sort of rock pool. Then, I add water so that the pool is full. But, the 'action' is taking place below that mesh. Like this: My question is: How may the water in the rock pool behave? I mean, there's liable to be some turbulence (?) in the water beneath the mesh ~ I'd imagine? But, could that be sufficiently dampened by the layer of rocks, laid over the mesh, above all that activity? I'm looking to create a 'still' pool of filtered water, see? * Can you imagine what it's like, going about with This sort of mind crippling shit inside ye head all the time? Without baffles to force the movement up through the rocks it would just pass through underneath and the above, assuming you have out an amount of rocks in to counteract turbulence, would just become a puddle I.e. not forced through the filter. As precious baffles would be the way to move all the water
Squirrel_Basher 17,102
For what it’s worth you will never filter fully unless passing through external media mate . If you want that set up to filter the water you will at some time have to disturb everything to clean the media ,sludge and particles . Set up an external filter that pumps clean water back in .You can slow that up exactly as you’ve quoted with rocks or baffles as Katch said . Set up an inline tap which reduces the inflow to whatever suits. Dont try filtering in the holding tank mate . Very easy to make a filter ,gravity fed .Large media in the bottom with coarse filter pads next through to fine pads on top .The feed could be set up with a symphonic rather than low feeder pipe . Ken's Deputy 4,462
<Groan!> Don't even talk to me about Making a filter, mate! Fukk me, have I 'Been There'! That one was like the chicken box, only it never got made. Still got a bag of plastic scouring pads down the shed now No. Bought the Snape a fukk off big unit, in the end. Cost me hundreds. Worth it though! Now? Gonna just do the same for my frog. Just on a smaller, less costy scale This is the bad boy: 107 Performance Canister Filter, up to 130 L (30 US Gal ) - Fluval UK FLUVALAQUATICS.COM Fluval eTEC (Efficient Technology) construction employs cutting-edge design, materials & manufacturing methods to deliver powerful... I have a very long, Very happy history with Fluval's. Tried an Eheim canister one time. Broke the piece of shit in Hours! As above; I've somewhat lost the oomph to sit here and explain all my thoughts and reasonings. I know what I hope to achieve, and why. Really just pondering, out loud, here. Waiting for the damn frog to shit. He does that? I'll grab the filter.

Ken's Deputy 4,462
No way I can share water, mate We're talking a Snapper turtle in one tank. African Bullfrog in the other. Mixing and matching their waters would be like you being in a bath with a paki bloke! < shudders! > My Amazon basket now has the filter, the balls and ~ I almost forgot! ~ the 'Egg Crate' too. This very afters, I'm having flash visions of rough ideas. How I might consider setting up the enclosure, above the 'water line'. I like sneaking back to Piyo too. How she keeps her frogs is an inspiration to me She's why I bought the Bullfrog an Exo Terra!
