NEWKID 28,706
After SHH cracking pics of Fowey estuary yesterday, fancied an estuary walk this afternoon.... It was a bit busy on the main walk tbf, but the views are stunning, looking out to Exmouth and the sea from Topsham .. Along whats called the goat walk avocets feeding (the RSPB bird) Quick coffee in Topsham sat by the river, I grew up a mile upstream from here
South hams hunter 8,988
We have loads of avocets on the Tamar, my old man was saying they where a rare site when he was a kid but I see em all the time. Looks a cracking little walk, I'd have stuck a few Maddie's out in that bay

Ken's Deputy 4,462
Avocet isn't the RSPB poster boy for nothing! Fukk me, when I grew up they were only told of in whispers, around the sea wall. Like peregrine's. They were a thing of some far away time, then. Lost to us. Now, of course ...? I mean; A prestigious office block hasn't even Arrived, till it has its resident fukking pair of nesting Peri's! And avocets and spoonbills are barely registered! Hammers Fowey, and this one, remind me of some river I walked down, in Devon. Exe? Well known one. Can't remember now. I'd gone there to 'Tick' a Cirl Bunting. For some reason, I had to follow this river. The banks looked very much like those of each of these two. It was an 'exhilarating' walk. Hour or two of crawling between shoreside rooots and branches. Always a blind turn just up ahead. And me with an unleashed, game bred dog leading the way. Anyone, without a dog, had met me? They'd have thought I was a ghost. I was white as a sheet with terror, all the way! Just a needs must situation. Couldn't have navigated it with the dog pulling. Anyway, sorry! Where were we?

Could well of been along the Exe mate, I know Cirl Buntings nest along there, there are huge Reed beds that go onto farmland, wild hedges etc...Good habitat for them... Seen a few little gems today, redshank, dunlin, turnstone, lapwings and lots of geese... Was on Dawlish Warren reserve 2 weeks back watching a pair of shoveler.ducks...again pretty common now but a treat when I was a kid...lol

Guaranteed plenty of lapwings on there. Always used to head out that way when we used to go nesting. BUT, we weren't allowed to take even just one egg from the many nests there. It was my mate's older brother's 'rule', for some reason lol. We never even questioned it, and in a way, I'm glad now. Absolutely beautiful birds.

I took some binos today and tried to get my youngest a bit more interested, I think the habits of birds are lost on her though...lol
