FOXHUNTER 5,021
As the title says , there have been some greys feeding on a stubble over our boundary so I set up on our field adjacent . I placed out 6 decoys and tucked myself in a gorse bush. 2 skeins arrived and came in great ,1st skein I took a single , the 2nd bird didnt drop. 2nd skein took a lovely left and right so went home a happy bunny. 9 Quote Link to post
Sausagedog 7,381
They seem to be flighting over my shoot finally. Good shooting. Edited October 25, 2020 by Sausagedog Quote Link to post
Stavross 18,313
Nice one, I love having a go at the geese, it’s probably the only shotgun shooting that I would turn down rifle shooting to do, that and maybe duck 2 Quote Link to post

shovel leaner 7,650
I cut my shooting teeth wildfowling on the Severn estuary. There is nothing that gets my pulse racing like a skein of geese dropping in to a decoy pattern. I know a lot of game shooters turn their noses up at duck . I can sort of understand why , when you see badly presented duck , tame as hell being kicked off their pond and then doing a bit of a low circle flight before dropping back in . But well presented duck that have been fed away from the pond and are kept as wild as possible , are a different thing altogether , and wild duck or geese on the marsh or flight pond , more different still . The best birds / most memorable , that I have shot have all been duck , plus everyone wants to take a duck home to eat . Some of the best shooting for me is a Teal flight . I used to feed these few splashes near to home years ago . I used to get a few Teal , not many coming in . I would wait in the rushes next to the splash of an evening and when it was almost too dark to see , they would drop in , absolutely cracking sport . Another great sporting bird is Wigeon , I used to get down the river on a full moon and shoot Wigeon on their way to the WWT at Slimbridge . I also used to make an annual pilgrimage to the pontoon wash on the Cambridgeshire fens near Mepal . We used to take a little boat out to these hides made out of pallets in these pollarded willows that were poking there heads out of the flooded wash between the River Ouse and the New Bedford canal . The numbers of wigeon there was breath taking. I used to put my decoys out in the darkness and wait , I had a whistle made out of the brass off a 12 bore with 20 bore brass stuck in it . I’m feeling all nostalgic now . Since I started gamekeeping, I can’t do these things , I love my job , but there are real drawbacks . I don’t get to go sea fishing or Wildfowling now . What’s the saying “ you can’t have your cake and eat it “. 4 Quote Link to post
terryd 8,951
Wildfowling is great fun even what I do in land with just a small river and a few puddles to play with. All the ponds are bought up by me but still get fun from the little splashes. We have a puddle in some maze hardly 10 yards across and foot and half deep. I feed it twice a week and we shoot it at dusk. Having mallards drop in over the hedge with no warning unless I have the lurcher who hears them coming is brilliant fun. Then a few teal have been using it lately and they are like rockets. Down the river there is few wigeon and when they start whistling. I am tensed up like john wayne and boy do they shift. Duck flights are pure magic . The sound of Wigeon whistling , then the smell of them covered in gravy , fantastic. 2 Quote Link to post
Sausagedog 7,381
Try it with a muzzleloader! I use to get under teal on their way to a roost. The noise of their wings while at speed was awesome. Edited November 9, 2020 by Sausagedog 2 Quote Link to post
FOXHUNTER 5,021
Duck flighting is magical , just when you think nothing is coming and thinking about packing up the teal start dropping in Thing is it's often too dark to get on them. 2 Quote Link to post
