Sausagedog 7,381
Lamped last night in some cut grass but saw nowt but hares which is good news! I may of nobbled one of my lamp shys! My pigeon shooting this summer is mediocre to say the least! No streams of birds on flight lines this year so far so decoying has been very random! And let's not mention not so good shooting on my part with nitro guns....so today I broke down and perrrchased a pigeon bouncer and prized my doubled barreled 12g muzzleloader out of the cabinet. Wow, still not many birds but I've hardly missed! I shoot this better than anything modern! And I get black and smell of farts! The boom sounds better too. I'm using salvaged shot from rotten swollen cartridges given to me in spring. Mostly #5 shot. Ancient percussion, all shapes and sizes also given to me. Powder is 3f or/and finer. It's slowed down again, these local birds know the score! Think I'll pack up soon and go for walk with Fairweather next. That is unless granddad is issued with further directives! 10 Quote Link to post

I wonder if you are over leading birds with the nitro powders. Maybe if you are used to slower burning black powder and giving pigeons the same lead you may be in front of them. Quote Link to post
shovel leaner 7,650
Thanks for sharing your adventures. It’s genuinely interesting to me to read about your old guns and powders and how they perform. We have very different ways of doing things , I see you as a purist. If we were fishermen you would have a split cane fly rod , and I would have a can of Cymag . Vive la difference as they say in France . Quote Link to post

In fact most of the nitro shot birds I have been surprised just how little lead I used! Bloody modern guns! Glad when these fads die off 2 Quote Link to post

If I could have my way I would hunt deer with muzzloaders and archery gear too. The times I have hunted deer, Fallow, red and roe have all been the most exciting when I can nearly reach and touch them so hunting them with traditional old gear would be the cherry on the cake for me. 4 Quote Link to post
