Sausagedog 7,381
Today was ruined partially by a dentist appointment this morning so I got stuck into leaf blowing and sweeping, then the bird feeders needed doing. The morning was dry but rain was forecasted for the afternoon. Undeterred I grabbed the .45 smoothrifle ( long rifles in the early states were also offered as smoothbores and commonly called smoothrifles due to them retaining sights). We soon flushed a bird or two but one gave a simple shot at nearly thirty steps. The 3/4oz of #5 downed it, the dog pegged it and I ended it. We got a woody, a squirrel and a winged vermin. I missed one pigeon, a winged vermin (twigs and branches) and the squirrel needed a second shot to bring it down. 100%reliability. Then the rain came and I pushed for home. I put a woodcock up today also which was nice. Back in to a warm stove to dry kit.The gun was cleaned in ten minutes with just boiling water, rod and patches. Off to cook a bird from last weekend now..... SD. 5 1 Quote Link to post
Stavross 18,724
A fine way to spend a bit of time before the rain sets in, I love the pictures you take, I don’t mean this to sound like I’m calling you old but they remind me of simpler times when people went out to feed themselves, friends and family, no night vision, thermal or any other gadgets, just a simple gun and an understanding of your environment, I’m glad I’m old enough to remember these days, even though I was just a lad 3 1 Quote Link to post
