Teckel or Terrier

Recommended Posts

Which do you prefer? Had terrier all my life and all but one have worked above or below ground Russell, Lakeland x and  Borders. But having seen a decline in the last decade in the quality of terrier in generally, not to say that there isn't still good terrier out there. I have recently had the opportunity to purchase a Teckel pup. First seen Teckel about 15 or so years ago and wondered what they were. Having read a few articles about their ability to work and track the opportunity arose to purchase a pup from a breeder who worked them daily. And to say that I am impressed would be an understatement, started using it nose around 4 months old , then started bushing and speaking by 41/2 months. Finds mice, rabbits and pheasant on a daily outing in the thickest of undergrowth. The only downsides in my opinion is the colour of they coat (can disappear in a blink of an eye), their coat holding mud and this applies to terriers as well their ability to go deaf when trying to recall them.

I like a good mongrelized terrier mix for bushing .always have .I've had terriers with names attached that were shite bushing terriers, I had 3 sealyhams 20 years ago that would take some beating .sadly lost the lines with the last bitch been baron.ive tried teckles ,not for me I'm afraid .struggled with dry stone wall etc  .dont get me wrong they could hunt .but just couldn't cut the terrain I hunt . Keeper mate who do work for had a teckle x beagle she was an exceptional hunting dog .just threw deaf ears on you even 10 ft away .

The best bushing dog I've owned was a terrier I bred accident mating between a untested fell dog and a plummer bitch he would listen to every word you say could even shout him off a fresh scent scream his bollocks off when he saw what's in front of him sound with ferrets always In  right place right time caught many many bolters bolted many a fox underground but got rid of him cose he walked after a hour one day I rehomed him and I still kick myself every day for it.

I have one and have had terriers before. They hunt well but their legs are too short. I like this one and it's a nice little character but I wouldn't buy another. They just can't keep up. I'm thinking of Putting a beagle or beagle/terrier over her to add a bit of leg to some pups and keep some.

At the end of the day it depends what type of ground the dogs are working over. For me it's dense brambles and undergrowth and the tackel can work it far better and faster than my terriers and is finding game that the terrier have gone passed because teckel have better nose. My terrier have many seasons bushing under their belt and the tackel has only just started.
