Bonkers! Agreed mate . i guess at one time numbers were low enough to afford it a season but those in the know will have seen fields bouncing with them in and around Bicester ,Oxford . The CWD is non indigenous and I have no idea why it was ever given a season if you look at the W&C Act. Should be eradicated from the Country, as should the highly destructive Muntjac. The UK population of Chinese Water Deer is of international significance to the survival of the species. There are more here than there are in their country of origin. High fawn mortality coupled with habits that make them easy to stalk/shoot means that although they are non-native, they aren't really "invasive."

I am quite simply making the point the W&C Act, in simple terms wants rid of non indigenous species. The fact that we have a non indigenous species, the CWD (escapees from wildlife parks by all accounts), which may or may not be of International significance in relation to the entire population is not the problem of the W&C Act, it is in contradiction with the Act to protect CWD, so why on earth did the Government give it a season a few years back? I haven't noticed any sections in the W&C Act that says we can protect non indigenous species if we have more here than anywhere else in the world, or because they don't actually do that much damage! The CWD, Muntjac, Grey squirrel, Mink, etc etc etc should NOT be in our countryside. All of these can be removed from the countryside on sight, except now the CWD, because apparently it suits a few people!? I'm not trying to start something here, just making the point of how Laws can be ignored/side-lined/etc when it suits certain authorities!
BGA 117
I wasn't looking for an argument, sorry if that's what my post suggested. I was just saying that I thought that was the reason they were given more protection than Muntjac. I don't particularly agree or disagree with it.
