secretagentmole 1,701
The other half had a diesel Astra that consumed it's own head gasket and died in a cloud! Now with the three mutts and a limited budget we needed a medium sized estate at a minimum. I espied a cheap car lot and on the way back from an evening shooting we had a look round it. At the back, without a price on, as a large blue estate, diesel, 2004, great condition body, full leather interior. So we went back when the owner was on site and had a closer look, touch screen (code locked), electric seats, electric windows and sunroof, split boot lid (glass opens or entire lid opens), 7 spoke alloys, mesh front grill, then he shows the inbuilt phone (operated by handset or touchscreen - which is locked with no code). Starts it up and it makes a thumping noise like a bad tempered cart horse in a stable below 1500 rpm, which means new DMF required, when accelerating it was cutting out, new injectors required! He wanted £400, she haggled him down to £350, delivered to the door!!! £150 saw a single mass flywheel, new clutch, bearing and clutch cylinder! £200 saw it fitted at a local garage! The injectors, a saga, we took the car to Lincoln as Advance Autos could test the injectors and see which was bad £36 saw them all pronounced as bad. She shopped around and found someone breaking a 2 litre diesel Mondeo, same injectors, bought those as the car was being broken as the clutch master cylinder had broken and the guy was fed up with it after spending hundreds on other things. We got the 4 working injectors for £44! Made arrangements to go back to Lincoln and found that the thermostat housing had broken. £25 saw a new one from Rimmer Brothers and she fitted that. Got the car back to Lincoln and Advance Autos charged £72 to code the injectors to the ECU of the engine and then put them in! Car fixed. Code bypassed by pressing 3 buttons on the cd controller...This revealed we do have the 6 disc unit fitted in the boot, also sat nav too! Sub £1000 for a top of the range X Type! 1
