Pillow Mounds At Huntingdon Warren

Recommended Posts

Been wanting to go and have a look a some Pillow Mound on Dartmoor. So walked up to the Avon Dam then on for a mile or two and there they were at least twenty of them and loads more all over the hill. Them old Warrener's did some graft about 6' high with a ditch all the way round ranging from 20' long to 50' long then drainage trenches that zig zag down the hill.

There must have been thousands of rabbits on this hill at one time but now could not see any sign at all,I would love to ferret one of these that was active.

:hmm: A lovely sight,..but, it is not all it seems Arry,...

I've done a fair few Burial Mounds, ancient sites, old traditional Warrens,.etc and even when they are packed to the gunnels, the job often slows down after a frenzied twenty odd...Then,..its digging time, and as you have probably noticed,..them rabbit Shangralas are mighty deep... :cray:

Me too Arry! I've just got back from a week in North Devon and my two kelpies saw more (out of season) rabbits in one week than poor Noggin's seen in his whole life.

What are they, never seen or heard of them.

Aussie whip Warrener's used to farm rabbits and created these pillow mounds man made burrows kept drained to encourage them to breed. But the sheer amount of work needed to create them and the drainage ditches gob smacked me, they look like giant graves. I only looked around a few hundred yards and there were about twenty, the whole of Huntingdon Warren covers 600 hundred acres so i've no idea how many mounds there are.

Thanks for the comments. Shame as I headed up there I was wondering who own it and if there was a chance of getting permission.

Would have a loved permission on the high ground. Not to be though dead as a Dodo.
