neil b 2,473
On our way up this morning we witnessed all weathers from light rain, lightening, strong winds and snow we had it all. Once we got to our permission it was its usual windy self 15mph it said on the BBC weather app but it felt a lot more, the wind was cutting too. We had a spot in mind so got suitably clothed and set off, on our approach we could see a few rabbits moving about so fingers crossed we should get some sport. Once up to the place we were greeted with a big mound of what can only be discribed as a sort of shaley limestone mix. There were holes everywhere so with 20 purse nets down and 150yrds of long net round we set too entering 5 ferrets, it wasn't long before the action started 3 bolted in no time then another one out, with the constant wind it made it impossible for either us or the lurcher to here any subterrainal thunder, or anything for that matter, the ferrets stared to show here and there so we boxed them up, 2 were awol for a spell after much locating we found them at 4 ft so I began to dig the undigable, a big roundmouth would have been better than the bulldog rabbiting spade we usually use it was coming back in faster than I could get it out, after what seemed like an age I broke through only to see both ferrets and the rabbit just out of reach, after abit of coaxing we recovered them both, on picking the nets up the lurcher had moved to our left and was marking another sett nets round here and another 3, 2 bolts and 1 dig, once the turf was off it was a thick crust of compact shale once through that we were into the tube and ferret and rabbit recovered on gutting them we discovered 2 had pea sized young inside them, this more or less spells the end of our season. After being battered by the constant wind and sleet we called it a day on a pityfull 7 .Back at the van we had once again we had lunch supplied by ryn then started the trip home.
