terryd 8,869
Nice frosty morning and good weather. We had a quiet weekend last week. But today decided to try some ground where he might get a run to test his leg. Straight away he flushed a rabbit which headed up into the wood which leads to a big main road so I got him back. We started working our way into the fields and he gave a nice mark on an easy set of holes So popped the young jill in and the dog was ready wasn't long and the rabbit was neaty pursed in the hedge. I need a better camera so we started working away along and the dog was covering the hedge really well. I have noticed he gets in the hedges more now and he was being really through. Wasn't long before we had another mark I got stuck in and started getting some nets down but it was a bit of a struggle. Unfortunately I suffered from premature bolting I had just spent an age crawling around when I heard a rustle and the dog thundering up the field. Ran the ferret through anyway but if had gone. So around the field down onto a wet old hedge. The dog was walking the hedge row winding as he went. Next thing he started darting along as a rabbit ran down the middle and he disappeared into the hedge. When I got there I couldn't see him any where. Then about two fields away I spotted a rabbit crossing a corner with the dog right up his back side and he just missed him as he hit the hedge. He some how got through a load of hedges fences at speed and kept up with the rabbit. He doesn't really jump but must have done. Bloody good going and I felt quite chuffed with him. Eventually caught up with him and called him over and started heading to the car. I noticed he wasn't by my side and looked around and saw his tail in the air behind a big old bunch of briars. I started beating them down toward him when the rabbit bolted out with the dog afoot or two behind. He gave a squeak of frustration and the went around the corner. Now I new they were heading up a hard core track with big old gate. He could not miss seeing it. I heard the gate give give a bloody big crash and thought great here we go again. I expect find him in a heap but he was no where to be seen. Found him along the hedge row marking again. Not sure how he negotiated the gate he either went over it or by the sound of it through it full tilt. We were bother crouched in the hedge looking at each other try to read if the other person/dog could hear any thing lol. Quite funny. Anyway rabbit number two soon in the bag So I have come to the conclusion the dog is a nut case and a scary bugger to work lol. But by god he can hunt When you see these eyes coming your way you need to get moving so a proper test for his leg and I can tell its bit stiff. So gently gently and definitely no lamping yet as it will be the turning that will stress it 7 Quote Link to post

Arry 23,797
Nice natural write up mate, bet you cringed when you heard that gate bang. All I seemed to be doing lately is those flailed black thorn hedges, the flailing helps to get in but all them bits. I also put a post on rabbits bolting early on the other page never know so many, Im wondering if the flailing makes them more nervous. Cheers Arry Quote Link to post
