Mates S510 Did Well Tonight.

Well, I could either sit indoors sweating my tits off tonight or, go hunting ........ No contest

 

I met my shooting buddy and his S510 at the rugby club at 10pm.

It was a bright full moon tonight and the grass was dry. The first few rabbits that we tried to get within range of, either heard or saw us coming and ran for cover.

He missed one, I missed 2.

 

While I was stalking on the archery field (to no avail), he got the first one by the portacabins.

It was a good shot, right behind the eye, complete with obligatory backflip. When he got to it, it was sitting there like nothing had happened. It didn't make a fuss when he picked it up and finished it off.

 

We made our way round and checked a couple of other areas.

 

I ended up by the bottom end of the archery field. As I panned round, I spotted eye shine through the metal fence so, I got steady on the cheapo ebay stick, adjusted my scope for a clearer pic and, took the shot.

I actually hit the poor thing in the throat.

That new lever thingy on my HW100 made for a very quick reload and, within a few seconds, a second shot was threaded through the fence and, the rabbit was still.

Because of how long that field is, I went straight over the 8ft fence to retrieve it. It turned out to be a 35/40yrd shot in total.

 

By the time I'd tied it up next to the first one and got back, my mate had shot 2 more.

The first one just dropped on the spot - the one next to it didn't move. When the second one was hit, it flipped into the bushes where we couldn't find it.

 

We gutted them back at the cars - all 3 livers were nice and clear. Not a single white spot. Hopefully this means they're all on the up.

We both use NS Viper nv kits. I think the glare does give me away sometimes but, that can be sorted.

They're a nice easy thing to set up and use but, I found they took a little getting used to at first.

It was one of those shots that I knew was bad as soon as I pulled the trigger. That's why I scraped up my chest and stomach scrambling over the fence after the second shot If it needed necking, I wanted it done asap.

But, the follow up had caught it perfectly.

 

Mark was absolutely spot on. He had one of those nights where almost everything went his way

We took another quick trip out again last night

 

It seemed to be all young flippers ......

 

As soon as we got there, Mark switched on his NV and there was one sat waiting for him. It was even nice enough to give him a perfect side on shot at around 40yrds. He hit it well and it did one almighty back flip into the long grass down a bank. We had a good look for it but, ended up leaving it for the foxes.

 

We moved round to a different spot where there's a warren up a bank, past a post and rail fence. I had this one at an absolute max of 25yrds. Again, a nice clean hit and a back flip followed by wriggling that took it into thick undergrowth. We couldn't find this one either - the brambles and bind weed were just too thick.

 

Mark stalked his next one into some mature pine trees where the ground is pretty clear. After a 20 minute game of hide and seek among the tree trunks, he took a close range shot that made this one jump straight toward him.

The shot was good, placed well. The pic shows the exit wound.

 

I spent a while watching another up a bank. This one kept dodging in and out of the undergrowth, not giving me a clean shot. I wanted to wait until it came well out into the open this time but, it seemed to be refusing.

After a while, I decided to have a quick look at the rest of the bank. As I panned round, I saw one. It was so close that it was blurry on my NV - I turned my IR down and had to reduce my PA to 15yrds. It was just sat there with it's head above the grass.

I gave it a little hold over because it was so close. The shot was spot on but the pellet passed straight through. This one went sideways and kicked like crazy in the grass. When I found him, his nerves were still trying to kick his legs off.

 

From what I've experienced so far, I think last nights active rabbits was caused by a mixture of shooting young 'uns and close range pass throughs. I'm happy to take opinions on this theory
