Heart Check Up?

Recommended Posts

My mum is in hospital after suffering a heart attack, she's only 57 which is a bit young. Her Dad died at 59 with a heart attack, he was as fit as a fiddle and only a few weeks prior to his death he had his leg broke in an accident. My Grandmother always said it was something to do with the broken leg that caused his fatal coronary but now I'm not so sure.

I'm 31, although I'm in decent shape I must admit I've abused my body over the years taking illegal substances that are harmful to the heart as well as legal ones that are just as damaging. I've had a few funny spells over the years aswell as chest pain on occasions. I've been told that if there's a chance these heart problems are hereditary I'm in entitled to a heart check up, does anyone know if this is true?

When you say your in decent shape but have abused your body with substances both legal and illegal are we talking about stuff related to bodybuilding or performance enhancement in any way.......if so its not the substances themselves that are harmful to the heart as the heart is just a muscle.....its what those substances allow the heart to do that can cause problems is their any LVH thats normally associated with what you describe........im no cardiologist but ive a little bit of knowledge and experience in this area if theres anything i could maybe help put your mind at rest with ..........or pm if you prefer.......just dont ignore it in the hope it heals itself.

Sorry i didnt read that properly you havent had a check up yet......get it checked mate.

No mate not of the PED kind, talking about Colombian Marching Powder which is just as damaging to the heart as PED'S.

I was thinking of eventually going on a course of gear after a few years of training naturally but now I'm not so sure, it raises your blood pressure and the orals destroy your Lipids turning your cholesterol levels to that of an old woman. If this heart problem is hereditary than I'd be a walking heart attack whilst on a course.

Raises your blood pressure for the time you are on them.....thats one of the reasons to cycle.....these are bright times for gear as the sporting world is currently showing....the negatives are constantly being combated by positives but ultimately the heart as a muscle has its limits that gear allows to temporarily get past......but it is just a muscle and must be treated as such.
I haven't looked into it but surely the heart grows whilst on a course? It's a muscle after all.

Exactly......hence LVH..............by the way the heart muscle of an athlete grows larger regardless of gear....its not necessarily a bad thing.
Yes I guess it's a good thing if it is ocurs naturally from weight training, heavy cardio etc..... I'm guessing having LVH due to factors like high blood pressure, steroids etc isn't healthy on your body.

At the end of the day we are all gonna die one day, what will be will be i suppose....

I'll add my voice to the "get it checked" brigade.....   I had a heart attack at 45, having ignored chest pains on two or three occasions in the years before. My wife escorted me to the doctor and m
