What Net ?

Recommended Posts

Hi people, firstly please forgive my ignorance. My son is having a this years ferret kit and obviously won't be ready for work until next year. Its been awhile since I been ferreting and have always used purse nets.We have no dogs and have thought about using different nets to surround the buries/warrens/bushes.What net do we need to catch the rabbits in without a dog?long net, stop net or trammel net?

A long net typically over 20 yards long.

A stop net usually between 5 and 15 yards long.

A trammel net with three walls, the large mesh outer walls create the pockets.

And just to confuse you some more a net with pockets that does not have outer walls.

As said above, depending on what type of ground is being worked if you have a 100 yards of net a 50yd and 2 x 25yds would be more suitable. The type of ground I work is varied from large fields to sand dunes, so it pays to have different lengths of nets to try and cover as many bases as possible.

On a typical day doing tight hedgerows and large fields I would carry 2 x 50yds, 2 x 25yds and about 10 x 5yds. It does help if you know the ground that your working, as you should have an idea of where the rabbits will bolt too.

This is a typical day doing tight hedges and large fields where for the most part the rabbits stick to the hedges when they bolt. On both sides of the hedge we use 5yd stop nets placed at angles to the hedge to catch any rabbits that bolt out of the hedge but run along the hedge as they do on large fields.

However, sometimes as they near the end of a hedge they like to cut the corners so a 25yd net placed on the corner of the field sometimes picks up the odd rabbit or two.

Any gap in the hedge that allows you to set a stop net should be used. You will see the long net set on the other side of the hedge as there is a junction with another hedge on that side of the field.

With large field it is mostly a waste of time running long lengths of net along the hedge, unless there is a good reason to do so. In this picture the field is narrowing as we approach the end of the field and the rabbits bolt across the field to the railway embankment on the other side. So for the last 150 yards or so a net was placed along the hedge.

I have a quick set, 25yd and 2 x 5yd stop nets. Getting a 30yd and 2 stops also.

Invaluable I find the quick set once you know how to set correctly. Thankfully the guy that made it, came out and gave some excellent tips.

TC and Katchum also gave good advice.
