lifelong cumbrian 1,829
Greys g lite 5' 6" had some big fish on this by accident but handled them. https://www.fishingmegastore.com/greys-glite-spin-rod~721.html I also have a 4ft 1 piece 1-4lb class spinmatic rod, its like a wand. great fun with a nice trout on, the day will come when i hook something bigger, not bothered if i loose fish, i enjoy the fight. i use this on streams flicking repps under bushes etc, you can fish 6 foot in front of you as the bait will be fishing right to you. Fairplay cumbrian, still struggling meself lol Not trying to be funny Francie, but don't compare your catches to LLC, he has fished for years and in that time has picked up a knowledge of the rivers he fishes. He probably knows every stone on the bottom of the rivers he fishes. My advice would be to stick to one river and learn how that fishes in different conditions. You will find taking places on the river, where running fish like to rest, there will be different places dependant on the hight of the water, learn all you can about the water you can never know it all but don't let that stop you trying. But most of all just enjoy fishing for what it is and don't get sucked in to 'if I don't catch I have failed mentality' I caught my first sea trout at 5 years old and I am still learning 55+ years later. lifelong cumbrian 1,829
As TC says i have fished since i was a young lad so hopefully have gathered a bit of knowledge about it, it is a game of trial and error to me, i think the most important thing is putting the time in. I put a lot of time in trying different things out, thats the best way to learn i think. Some days how ever confident you are feeling it does not work other days everything falls into place. You learn something new every time you are out. Was out last night with the fly rod ,fished until dusk, had a couple of snatches at the fly in a nice little run soon after i arrived, just before i went home after 4 hours i thought i would fish that run down with my ultra light spinning rod and a tiny rapala, one nailed it second cast. if i had not tried that i would have got nothing. Been today put 9 hours in, fished worm first as river was up and coloured, nothing on worrm, as it started to clear a little and drop a couple of inches i tried mepps and rapalas, one snatch each on the mepp and rapala and never hooked either. Went back to the car had a cup of coffee and waited a little more. Started to look like a decent fly water so i rigged the fly rod up with a full intermediate and managed to winkle another sea trout out. All day for 1 fish but i was chuffed with that. One thing i like to do is fish a lot of the river, i fish the pools like everyone else does but i also like to fish the bits other people find less productive, i don't mind getting into a rough old bank to get a few casts in a bad place, i think these places if holding fish at that time give you a good chance as they have not been bothered the same. On a highish water i like to fish all the slow bits off the main current where ever they may be, these places will change as the river rises and falls. Running fish have to take a breather now and then so they will slip into a slack bit of water some where, we hope to locate that place and put a bait in it. 2 Quote Link to post

lifelong cumbrian 1,829
What you wanting to fly fish for, trout, sea trout, salmon. How big is the river. Cant go wrong with shakepeare fly rods, yes they are a cheap brand but you would not believe how good they are for the money, diawa very good also, no need to spend a load of money for fancy gear. I buy most of my stuff second hand off ebay. I usually use 2 flies for sea trout. 3 for brown trout. 1 for salmon. It takes a long time to get decent casting a fly rod single or double hand, it took me a long time anyway. I would recommend you go out with someone competent who can explain the basics to you. If you lived here i would have quite happily have given you a few lessons, Lure fishing is great but getting a good salmon on a fly rod takes beating. There are plenty of good videos on youtube about fly casting. Pm me your address and i will send you a few lures free of charge. 1 Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,829
These shakespeare switch rods for 11ft for 7/8 lines, a great rod to have, you can learn to fish overhead and double hand and the same rod will be very competent for either and the 7/8 model would be ok for trout to salmon on a small river. 1 Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,829
A useful video for beginner. On thing if your reel has a frame around it you need to thread through frame before doing arbour knot. Quote Link to post
